When installing this application I have received the error message that indicates there is a problem communicated with the dde desktop. Crossover reports a problem too.
Does anyone have any ideas how to get this work? Also I have Works 4.5a if that makes a difference and I am running Slackware 10.0 with the standard kernel.

I am working on this app as well. I have it running on my Gentoo box but on my notebook I too get the errror you get. I have OfficeXP on my home box so perhaps this is some thing affiliated with it.
The only issue I have at home is that it states no default printer selected.
i don't know why you would want to install works 4.5. it just happened to be the most handy version for me to try. It did work- other then not being able to print. the error you get is related to printing. a newer version of microsoft works will work i think because they will use a 'generic driver' api which wine & crossover have support for since all other applications would use this same api to print.
