WordPerfect X3 runs very well

I have WordPerfect X3 running very nicely in a Windows 98 bottle under CrossOver Professional 8.0.0 with no other software installed in this bottle.

The Enhanced file dialogs must be diabled, they still don't work.

As mentioned in the forum, it doesn't open correctly and you must launch it twice and then manually maximize the window. I use a simple script to launch WPX3:
"/home/mus/.cxoffice/[etc, path to shortcut]/WordPerfect+X3" "$1" &
"/home/mus/.cxoffice/[etc, path to shortcut]/WordPerfect+X3" &
If you configure the .wpd file association (e.g. in the Konqueror settings) to use this script, it will allow you to launch WP automatically when you click on a WP document file.

In my hands, everything works, except the generation of PDF files from very large documents (several hundreds of pages).

I would say that this level of functionality would allow for a silver medal.

Regards,

Paul.

I can confirm Paul's findings for the Mac platform, too.

The only difference is that on the Mac, you must install Internet Explorer 6 in the same bottle, and prior to installing WPX3.

I also cannot check out documents that have 'several hundreds of pages'.
I do have one document which has 250 pages, though, and it reformats & prints quite nicely.

Final note: I haven't yet been able to install any Service Pack for WPX3.
In case somebody should succeed in doing so, please let me know. Thanks.

Hello Paul,

When you say "everything works", do you mean the macro functions (including short keyboard macros) as well? In WordPerfect 12 these do not work, but as versions of WPX3 can in the meantime be obtained fairly cheaply, the availability of this function would (for me at any rate) be well worth the price of a small outlay.

Regards,

Hugh

Hi Hugh,

I have been over-enthousiatic I'm afraid. I usually don't use macros so I didn't notice they are not functioning at all. I also assigned a macro to a key stroke but it doesn't work, again I my hands.

I'm sorry.

Regards, Paul.

Hello Paul,

Not to worry. Maybe some day macros will be made to work. The definition of (quick)styles is a workaround of sorts, but activating them involves too many keystrokes to be really convenient to insert short snippets of frequently recurring text.

Anyway, thanks very much for a very prompt reply.

Best wishes,

Hugh

I am finding that going into settings and clicking ENVIRONMENT will crash the program every time. This sounds to me that it is related to X3's inability to remember its window position and selected toolbars on startup. I seem to remember that Wordperfect has a very elaborate set of startup options and parameters for setting the environment, so perhaps that's a clue toward a solution, but so far I am coming up short in my efforts to make the program usable.

Hmmmm, annoying. I am unable to reproduce this problem here (OpenSUSE 10.3, CX Professional 8.0.0, Win98 bottle). What configuration are you using? You might consider opening a support ticket since this behaviour is not typical.

Regards, Paul.

I must be doing something terribly wrong, then. I have tried installing WP12, X3 and X4 - all with no success. Could someone who has been able to get any one of those three to work properly on Snow Leopard under CrossOver v8.0.1 please post step-by-step instructions on how you did it?

Thanks,
J.R.

I too cannot get WP X3 to install properly, much less execute. My configuration is
Ubuntu 9.10
Crossover Linux Standard 9.0.1

I have tried both Win98 and WinXP bottles, with and without first installing IE6 (IE7 for WinXP). I have tried all the relevant tips in the Tips & Tricks for WP X3.

On Win98, WP X3 won't install unless you have IE5.5 or later, so I installed IE6 from within the Crossover install dialog. At the end of the WP install, it asks the user to restart the system. Should I click Restart Now, or Restart Later (and simulate a reboot of the bottle in Bottle Manager > Control Panel)? After the WP install exits, the Crossover install dialog doesn't seem to recognize that the installation is complete. If I cancel the dialog, it says the installation failed, although the WP program files are in C:\Program Files. Using Crossover Run... to launch wpwin13.exe starts the process - I can see it in System Monitor > Processes. - but it doesn't open a window, not even a splash screen. Launching it twice (as described above) does not help.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I need to get this running for a user who wants to move from Vista to Linux but cannot switch from WordPerfect to another word processor that supports Linux natively.

Thanks

Hi,

in a couple of weeks I will be switching to Ubuntu 10.04 with CrossOver Linux Professional 9. I will post a step-by-step instruction then.

I have been using WP for many years now and still consider it the most advanced and flexible text processor aorund (excluding Framemaker for very large documents). In my opinion, there is nothing like it running natively under Linux.
I am also using OpenOffice a lot and find it to be very useful as well. It is able to import most WP files. Of course, you have to get used to it but once you've the hang of it, most of what I used to accomplish with WP is possible with OO.

Regards,

Paul.

Finally got WP X3 installed and running in a WinXP bottle. Configuration:

  • Ubuntu 10.04 on a Toshiba Tecra M3 notebook
  • CrossOver Linux Standard 9.2.0
  • Windows XP bottle with IE 7.0 installed
  • WordPerfect Office X3

However, WordPerfect must be started twice, as described in the original post by Paul Mus.
