Iffy, at best: WordPerfect x3 - CrossOver 10.2 - Lion 10.7.3

I followed all of the Forum suggestions on this one: Installed WordPerfect x3 into a CrossOver 10.2 bottle, along with IE v7, turned off extended dialog before trying to open a file, etc.

Then I opened CrossOver and opened WPx3 from within its list of programs and all seemed fine, other than it opening collapsed to just the toolbar and at the bottom of the screen. But I pulled it up to the top and dragged the corner to open full size.

I then set WPx3's various view and edit settings, opened an existing file - which it would only do from Lion Documents, not DropBox - did a couple of simple edits and saved it. No problem. Until I tried to open another file from DropBox.

If I tried opening from the CrossOver menu next to the Apple icon, I got an error message saying:

The program wpwin13.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close.

This can be caused by a problem or a deficiency in Wine

Closing that message had no apparent impact on the still-open WPx3 window, where I could still edit the file I had moved to Lion Documents from DropBox and previously opened.

However, when I tried to open that or any other file using WPx3's "Open File" command, everything locked. At that point, everything I did within WPx3 - including trying to go back to the file already open - just brought a "ba-bump" sound. The only solution was to Quit CrossOver from the Dock.

Same thing if I try to open another file (never get as far as identifying one) from the CrossOver toolbar next to the Apple icon.

The only way it works is to use the Wine Glass toolbar - setting above the WPx3 toolbar - to open or create one file, stored in the Lion Documents directory, then open another already in that directory if I want access to more than one document at a time. But even that doesn't always work.

So, is there something I should be doing I haven't or some other tweak that might help? And does everything change if I upgrade to WPx5?

Thanks,
J.R.

I tried installing both WP 12 and WP X4 on my Air. No luck.

(You know, you'd think that Corel would pay the CrossTie developer team to come up with a nice way to make their product work on a Mac. There is a substantial market out there: Almost every other "old" lawyer I talk to wants to run WP on their Apple products. Corel, of course, stopped supporting the Mac version some years ago.)

CrossTie XI downloaded and installed just fine. The installation interface is not intuitive to those of us trained on Windows and Mac auto installs, but I figured it out after a couple of false starts.

I started with my WP X4. CrossTie saw the CD and started to talk to it. But it gave up the installation almost immediately with an error message.

I got much, much farther with my WP 12. Things looked promising for a time. The product did, in fact, install into a CrossTie bottle. But it didn't set itself up as a program I could find in the pull down menu. I could browse to the exe file and start the program, and I saved that route into the programs menu.

I used a Vista bottle, renaming it for this job. (I suppose I could try another bottle, as WP 12 was written for an earlier version of Windows. But I doubt that it is worth the effort.)

Now, when I open WP 12, through the /File/Recent files pulldown, I get an error box: WPENT120, Entrust initialization file not found, c:\windows\Entrust.ini.

I click OK, and a familiar WP startup screen asks me which WP mode I want. I have tried both of Wordperfect Mode and MS Word Mode. Both eventually fail.

On the WP blank document file, I can type. But I cannot save.

The Tools pulldown for files shows that the default file folder is c:\users\crossover\AppData\Corel\Wordperfec.... When you click on the little box at the end of the line to expand the path to read the whole line a WP error box appears, that the wpwin12.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. There is a reference to wine and the code weavers compatibility web page.

Cannot open files. The CrossOver browser is not useful to WP. Everything is grey. So cannot open the WPD files that I have on the laptop, or any doc file either.

It IS possible to type on the white screen. But as soon as you try to save the file, WP locks up and wants to close.

Please let me know, anyone reading this, if you want more detail.

Too bad. It sure would be great to run WP without the overhead which Fusion requires.

edit: sentence deleted - 'do not mention beta releases in general forums' - nice exposition otherwise, thnx .
