Winuae

Hi everyone,

I tested WINUAE (version 1.6,1) with crossover Games.
It installs well, the program starts correct. You get the well known interface and you can sellect/change the things like you want for the games.
I Used for the test the kickstart1.3.rom and lotus turbo challenge.adf as a floppygame (this works fine on the pc). When i run the game in crossover the loadwindow appears, i see the frameschecker and if i chose at the sounds: "a500 <winuae build-in>" i hear the loading sound (sound works very well as it should) but the window stays black, eventually i hear the game start (as it should with the intro song, so the loading of the game works well also) but window stays black. So after heard the song i quitted the windows and tried some other settings for the display to get the game visual good. Like resolutions and full screen and scanlines, but where i think where the problem could lay, is the "screen" it stands on "direct draw HAL (1280*788)" I cant change that in the settings in Winuae, but Perhaps if this can be changed in winesettings or added or something (i already tried at the graphicstab (managing bottle), changing (emulate a virtual desktop) in resolution, but that doesnt do the job, in fact the whole startup screen of winuae gets windowed).

In short, this program could work fully if the display function get fixed.

Now i offered to be an advocate to get games and some apps tested very good, i have a demo of 7 days at the moment, so i will try to do some testing, but that cost time.... so in those 7 days a could test fully only a few games. I will wait for the reply of that request.

1 more thing, i tested this with crossover GAMES, i dont know, how it works on Crossover MAC.

Ok i got it working:
apple OSX 1.5.7
WINUAE 1.6.1

You have to use Open GL (unsuported) in the " filter" tab and use full screen and point 32bit or bilinear 32bit in the filtersettings. (otherwise it wont work). When choosing that i got .adf flopies working. I triend to import my hdd image of winuae (with amigasys 4) of my windows machine, i met some trouble with it, have to figure that out yet. It is possible that if you make an hdd and install workbench on it will work fine, but i havent tested that yet. Have been quite some testing this 2 days (Winuae (.adf working), red alert (got it working), navyfield (not working))

Yo Paul!

Being the amiga nut that I am (I used to write articles for an
amiga diskmag here years ago), I was bound to end up here one
day  Somehow, I'm not surprised to find that this was
about the start of your adventure in this place - this is a good
thing ...<grin>...

I still have working Amiga hardware - a hot-rodded A500 with A590
side-car, kickstart 1.3/2.04 switcher...and a A1200 with 030/882/50
Cobra (with squirrel scsi) and 3.1 roms - I even play with them every
now and then, it's good for the soul...

Of course, in linux..one is likely to use the linux port of UAE,
which I know lags behind the win32 version by a bit -- I imagine
the same might be true (or worse) for the Mac port. I always have
a UAE installed ; usually I'll grab the source and compile them
myself...lately, I've been using E-UAE 0.28-wip4 which seems to
work really well....

Even so, I'll check the latest UAE win32 offering against COG 7.2.2
in linux, and see what pans out...

...you're right btw, perhaps it would be handy to be able
to edit existing postings in this section, on the other hand...

After getting over a small learning curve related to the winUAE
config/launcher GUI ...and thanks for the tip about the opengl
switch being in the filter settings (display filter??..what a
stupid concept ;), you really need that in COG/linux as well.

One of my more or less 'benchmark' tests for an amiga emulator,
is to feed it the musikdisk "Kaktus & Mahoney - Sounds of the Gnome"
...and it's still going in the background here. I'm guessing results
will vary wildly, depending on just which amiga game/app you use,
but Sounds of the Gnome was timing accurate and doing a near steady
50 fps in 800x600 mode...

I'll post my results using COG/linux in a new thread...

Hey Don,

Haha, good so see more amiga fans. Amiga was for me THE computer.
The games for amiga beats the DOS versions by masses!! The sound, the gameplay, the graphics....
yeah, funny though you menion it. Ive been besy the last few days with e-uae and i am very disapointed in the lagg of it.....been busy
installing the amigasys on it, it failed, it did work with the 3.1 workbench, but it laggs, and then i dont like, it. It should work properly. I tried also to install it in winuae with crossover, but it failed. (used the harddrive of the pc one....unfortunatly didnt work out) havent tested a hdd install manualy yet...but as you are mentioning a great performance, you made me curious again to check it more out.

You will hear from me of this soon!

...I see our omnipresent ninja masters have given us editing abilities
in here now -- marvel at their power!!... (;

I've no idea how far along amiga emulators are on Mac -- I'm actually
surprized that the winUAE + crossover combo works as well as it does.
Sure, my native E-UAE build beats it...but only by a bit, and 50fps
constant is totally usable as far as amiga stuff goes...

I will tell you that E-UAE's handling of it's config file (~/.uaerc in
linux) is a bit suspect -- I was finding the need to manually edit that
file because E-UAE wasn't doing it or getting it wrong..just FYI (;

Wel i have no editing rights here in safari in this thread (editing time past).
Miss the quote reply too.

But a tip for you Don, in the display " tab" you can adjust the framerate FPS ;) it can powerup your wishes ;)
at the moment i`ve been testing this ap for many hours now, and trying to setup a HDD with a bounch of games, will try to instal whdload on it.
I will keep you informed about the progress. a few things.

  • i dont get this work in windowed mode (at any settings)
  • i get a messed up screen (in full screen) see screenshot. I am trying to fix this. so stay tuned.

http://www.screencast.com/t/txFysiACtu

for the rest its working great. (with these options)

Ahh-haa...thanks for the tip, I did find that eventually but at the time I was
more interested in comparing the 'baseline default settings' and what performance
was like without tweaking those things an amigan probably would...

Regarding that screenshot...as opposed to things like game & demo disks (which
more than likely access the hardware directly), workbench is built on intuition,
and you can fix that underscan with the workbench->prefs->overscan tool. Normally
speaking though, I would be using p96 RTG emulation in the amiga guest and with
the UAE configuration to suit, when running workbench-3.1

...I'll get back to this, busy now testing other stuff..

Ok got it fixed. When using 800*600 choose full screen at display
Filter settings --> opengl -->32 bit billinear --> horizontale size and Vertical: 1/2x

Got it just right then (well on a macbook 1200*800 display).

Oh one more thing. BIG BUG, Don can you confirm it. When using Winuae, and you load on the hardisk and you press f12 to swich disks or any onther thing, when aply or anything else the configuration screen reapears all the time, so you can't apply the changes...

I can confirm this behavior, but it's -not- a bug -- it's more to do with
the way winuae is structured, and how it reacts relative to what the machine
emulation is doing at that moment...ie; you have to either stop the emulation
or reset it to apply changes in this situation.
