Why not use Mplayer
Anonymous

Why would you need MS Media Player 9, when Linux/Unix Mplayer has Windows Media 7,8,9 support ?

not sure, since I haven't tried it out myself. Got the info from http://www.mplayerhq.hu/

I tryed it and it works very well
it can also play quicktime and real content.

I dont think anyone needs MS Media Player on linux

Many media and media-related applications on windows (like the Rhapsody client) leverage the WMP installation. Getting WMP working would likely improve support for a number of other applications.

If you go back and read the previous posts, you'll see why people want MS Media Player 9+ on linux.

Many download-able music and media files are encoded with Digital Rights Management (DRM, or MS DRM as is it for WMAs) -- Because this requries an online license negotiation between WMP9+ and a Microsoft Server, mPlayer does not support this type of playback.

Hi I have my music in windows media player and unfortunately it wouldnt play in media player! My main aim is to download it into an ipod. How do i get around it!plz assist

thats because WMV v9 comes in different codec form
WMV v9 Screen - Windows only
WMV v9 - Windows, Mac and Linux (Mplayer)
WMV v9 image v2 - Windows only
WMV v9 Advanced - Windows only

thats why its important to have WMV ported to Linux. When people say WMV v9 works on macs and Linux they are talking about a specific version of the codec.

Well, mplayer can be good, it also does an awesome job at playing DVD's but it doesn't do the best job. You try to copy the plugin, and the browser just doesn't like it, etc...

Just the way Microsoft build WMP is unmatched I must say. I'm not a big fan of MS myself, but there are some things that other products just cannot compare to. 3 of them being Exchange Server, Office, and WMP.

The last time I tried to install WMP9 it died during install. I'll have to give it another shot though.

I don't know if this will help but I just went ahead and ran the Windows Media Player 9 setup program under Crossover 6.0.1 and the install ran fine and had the error when it starts to install the Roxio CD software. The player was installed just fine; although, there were issues with the codecs working properly. I went to the Microsoft website at http://download.microsoft.com/ and clicked on the Windows Media link on the left hand side and downloaded the file called "Codec Installation Package for Windows Media Player 7.1 or later" and ran that setup. Once it was done, I had no problems using the player with the websites through Internet Explorer. I should add that I did install Internet Explorer 6 first as there are still issues with the player being properly linked to Firefox and Mozilla. I haven't tried downgrading my Crossover to versions below 6 to see if the process works there as well. I have access to my 5.0.3 version so I will give that a try as well and see if it works.
