I think the biggest plus to the implementation of having any Windows media player above 6.4 is the browser plug in. I use Xine for most of my multimedia, but have had nothing but problems and major bug issues with Mplayer and the xine plugin for my browsers. With the Cross Over 6.4 media player plug in, I can finally watch most .wmv files on the web, whereas Mplayer or even Xine plugin again is problematic.
Also, with more additional progress and support to implementing some of Windows better uses into Linux, we (the Linux community) can assure that users who are stuck in the middle of the ease and familiarity use of Windows, and the sometimes very intimidating nature of Linux, can make that change to Linux without feeling completely lost (like many do and most of the reason why they never come back to Linux) if there are at least a few things that they constantly use on Windows, found in their Linux distro.
