Share Your Experiences with Watchtower 2008

Since most of you already have the new version of watchtower 2008. I would like to invite you to share you experience with the app using crossover to run it.

The Watchtower Library 2008 works with CrossOver version 7.1.
I installed it on an intel MacBook and an intel iMac both running OS/X 10.5.
I just did a standard install with CrossOver, creating a WinXP bottle during the install. I did not need to do any pre or post fixes, all works fine (except a few of the known issues such as not being able to view maps, etc)

I was reading the thread related to the WT 2007 installation, does the fix to COMCTL32.DLL apply to the WT 2008 version as well?

Thanks,
Carlos

I'm a happy Darwine user ;) I've got WT Lib 08 working fine using Darwine on a couple of my Mac computers. Darwine is, as you might know, the Mac port of Wine, which of course is a free (FOSS) system.

One pays Cross-Over for the extra support they provide over Wine. Unless Cross-Over can fully support WT Lib straight out of the box, then I would think it makes sense to tinker around on a free platform, rather than one you have to pay for, IMHO.

Using latest CrossOver in Linux.
Would not install the C++ files, the Visual C runtime from Microsoft is:
vcredist_x86.exe
This works fine in a "Wine" installation but cannot find the "Temp" folder to unpack in Crossover.
Looked in the file to see what was there.
This is the file list:
advapi32.dll 603 KB
advpack.dll 98 KB
comctl32.dll 603 KB
gdi32.dll 280 KB
kernel32.dll 967 KB
ntdll.dll 690 KB
user32.dll 565 KB
version.dll 19 KB

These are in the Windows\System32 folder.
I copied these files from the working "Wine" install.
In the "CrossOver" Windows\System32 folder I moved the listed files to a "safe" place, then copied the files from the "Wine" install to the "Crossover" install.
Then did a clean install of the WTLib 08 Works great.

Note:
Some of the files in the Crossover Windows\System32 folder cannot be overwritten, so you need to move or delete the files. I chose to move until I was sure all was well.

My experience is generally good. But there's still room for improvement. There are still a number of problems. Watchtower Library on Mac remains a second-class application. Which is a pity. The Library is not on the top of the list when it comes to compatibility. Can't blame CodeWeavers for that. Microsoft Office has the most pledges at near $10,000; compare that to Watchtower Library 2008, currently at $0. With wages to pay, which would you work on?

It has caused me to wonder if there is another way. See article!

Regards, Roy

I REALLY tried to resist the temptation to point out that I said that above 😉

I love the idea of it being packaged up without the overhead. There are a number of places where similar hosting to that found here can be hosted without charge. For example http://sites.google.com/ for a wiki\knowledge base; and a blog site like your own or one like http://wordpress.com/ could serve a similar role as these forums.

The Darwine (http://darwine.sourceforge.net/) project looks a little neglected to me, but I see some activity getting this packaged with fairly recent Wine versions for Mac OS X, eg. http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/

Being new to Mac from some years of Linux, I'm keen to see WTLib work on Mac as well as it does on Linux. Thanks for your efforts. Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

😉 Sorry to repeat what you said! What you said was correct. What I meant to say is that I've started doing it. At it about a month now. Work still in progress but intermediate results ready for review. I'd love for you to test it out and provide feedback. That would be very helpful.

Kind regards, Roy

Cool. I'll give it a whirl asap 😊

Pretty much everything works for me except the maps.

I haven't run any extra files like the COMControl or whatever it was.

All the audio and that works just not the maps.

Didn't try Synchronise because I don't have Office installed via CrossOver and I use Pages so that's not going to work anyway.

Other than maps this program works perfectly.

Hi, I've just installed the WL2008 Japanese on my Mac.
As for last version I really had a struggle with synchronization function between Japanese and English. It never worked.
However, this time I installed Japanese one and English one in the same bottle. It WORKED!!
If there are ones using two languages, try installing it in one bottle.

I'm not sure if anyone can help me out, I'm trying to install WT Lib 2008 using a WinXP bottle. When I get to the part to insert my disk it seems as if Crossover isn't reading it. Did you you have this problem.

Thanks,

Just tried WTLib 2008 with the crossover pro v8.0 beta 2 download.

Works great, with no com ctl mods, good land maps work and tool bars all display correctly and work.

Hi David:

I download Darwine new ver. yesterday. But my Watchtower Lib 2008 don't run, maybe is my error. I have a MacBookPro 15 from this summer. I didn't touch the trick file. Can you help me please, I appreciate.

Works great! All maps, toolbars, links, etc working here with Crossover 8.0 and WT Library 2008 on an iMac dual-core running 10.5.7! Just bought the product because I appreciate the ability to run the program without an emulator such as VMWare or Parallels, and NO WINDOWS!! THANKS CODEWEAVERS.

Dear Greg,
How did you do your installation? Using CrossOver, CrossOver Pro or CrosOver Games?
Did you start a new bottle and then proceeded with the WTL2008 install?
I am using a MAC Intel, Snow Leopard and just got CrossOver 8.
Thanks for your help.

Have you seen the Tips & Tricks section?

There is a step by step guide for installing WTL2008 on the Mac.

After installing a new bigger hard drive and Snow Leopard, I tried running the library as I had set it up using CrossOver 7 and Watchtower Reader. It wouldn't load. I downloaded the Crossover 8.0 beta and installed WT library 2008 in a new bottle. After a little processing time, it loaded off the CD with no problems. I'm running it now on Macbook 2 Ghz core duo with Snow Leopard. Maps and pronunciation are working great. I'm happy! Now I can dump my wife's HP boat anchor for an Imac!

I have install the new version of watchtower 2009 and it works great. you should share your experiences in the Watchtower Library 2009 Thread. Search for app Watchtower Library 2009 and share your experiences
