Does this help anybody?

I installed Warcraft III: RoC and TFT with the downloaded installers from the Blizzard online store.

I started up WC 3: TFT running under Crossover Games version 7.1 for Mac OS X and came up with the following error.

I had to quit (not force quit) CX games to exit WC, but I repeated the startup and again the same error came up.

After this I tried the suggestion in 'Thread: Won't start up', that is removing the Movies folder, and voila!

The game starts and runs perfectly, the only problems that I can find at the moment are that it only seems to support up to 1024x768x32 resolution, which does not allow for widescreen, and that Battle.net does not seem to be able to connect.

It does not require the CD to run as the downloaded installer includes the required files to run the game (the .mpq files that have to be copied with version 1.21b).

I hope this has helped someone and if anyone can work out how to get Battle.net to work, I would be very appreciative.

You can edit the registry so it will use widescreen resolutions . . . sortof. It will be stretched, but for alt-tabing it is native resolution.

The windows version of warcraft 3 does not offer widescreen resolutions in the option dialog, while the macos version does. With a trick you can force the game to run in your desktop's native resolution even if it is a widescreen one.

Set the following registry keys in the bottle that contains warcraft 3. Create keys as needed:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/AppDefaults/war3.exe/X11 driver/UseXRandr = "false"
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/AppDefaults/war3.exe/X11 driver/UseXVidMode = "false"

This disables screen resolution changing for all executables called "war3.exe", which is the warcraft 3 main executable. The drawback is that the game now crashes when you click "options" in the main menu, so set your options before changing those keys.

Thanks stefan, got war3 working on native res, but how do i get my mac to recognise it as a full-screen application?

You don't, in this situation ☹️

If your screen is 1440x900 for example, in Desktop mode MacOS pretends to run at 1440x879, because 21 pixels are reserved for the menu bar. This 21 pixels smaller res classifies the resolution as "not fullscreen". To make mac know it is fullscreen, the game has to switch the res to 1440x900. But you've just disabled that functionality to force the game into widescreen.
