WarCraft III Demo

The demo plays for the most part perfect in CX 3.0
You may need to add -- -opengl after War3Demo.exe
Desktop and Menu shortcuts were created as well.

Here is what I have in my config.

[AppDefaults\\War3Demo.exe\\x11drv]
; Warcraft III
"Desktop" = "1024x768"
"Managed" = "N"

I'm not sure which game version the demo is, but the full version with the latest patches runs well for me both with and without the -opengl switch. The mouse cursor shows up differently between the two modes but the gameplay and all is fine.

Did you use the native MSVCRT or not? I was wondering if it's just a problem with the full version installer that requires it.

Hello Alex,

Yes I use MSVCRT as native, i'm not 100% sure its needed as I already had
it set to native and the native dll in my /system directory before I installed
the game demo.

I tried the demo without -opengl in CX 3.0.0 and it runs as well but seems to run somewhat slower on my box.
The updates in the full game make the difference im sure, as they should fix internal bugs and provide some optimizations.

I tried to install Warcraft III (german version) with CX 3.0.0 according to the instructions in the Tips & Tricks section. But on my SuSE 9.1 machine (with KDE 3.2.1, Kernel 2.6.4-52-default and 3D Blaster FX5200 with NVidia driver installed) even the installation process got very tricky. Thats because I can't read the whole contents of the CD (under Linux the CD size is about 45MB when it should be nearly full). Maybe this is because of the new automount feature (namely: subfs) the new SuSE version uses. I got around this by copying the files under Windows to my HD and starting the installation from there.

Now the installation process works without any errors. But before the game could detect the original CD, I had to unmount and mount the CD manually as root (maybe also because of subfs).

When I now start Warcraft, I get the usual splash screen and the desktop window in which warcraft is started. The splash screen disappears and the intro starts playing (no audio and video, but this was to be expected). After clicking into the window to skip the intro Warcraft quits with an error message saying:

This application has encountered a critical error:

FATAL ERROR!

Program: C:\Program Files\Warcraft III\War3.exe
Exception: 0x0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) at 0073:403C93E8

The instruction at '0x403C93E8' referenced memory at '0x00000000'.
The memory could not be 'written'.

Press OK to terminate the application.

I tried to start Warcraft with and without the -opengl option and changed the screen depth from 16bit to 24bit, but nothing changed. Additionally I renamed the Movies directory but then Warcraft aborted right after the start.

Can you try running the demo just to see if it's something specific to the version of the game you are running?

Marco,

I would sugest you to try this:

1 - Make sure your nvidia's (from nvidia.com) GLX drivers are working.

2 - Clean your ~/.cxoffice directory to start a new installation with a clean system.

3 - Besides copying the files from a Windows partition, try to mount your CDROM this way:

mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom -t iso9660 -o ro,unhide

Make sure that /dev/cdrom and /mnt/cdrom are correct with your system.

The unhide option passed is used with CDs with copy-protection, I thinks that's why you see only 45MB.

4 - After mounting, try to install de game.

5 - After install, I'd suggest you to go to www.gamecopyworld.com and get a NO-CD patch for your WC3, it will help you a lot.

This way the english version is working great here, please let me know if it worked for you.

Hi Alex, hi Renato,

thank you for your suggestions. I've done everything you suggested, but unfortunately nothing changed (Renato, unmounting and mounting my CD is exactly what I'm doing. The CD is then accepted from within WC but installation is still not possible.) So I started experimenting and after 2 days I found the switch that did it for me. In the [dsound] section of the dotwine config file I uncommented the line "DefaultPlayback" = "2" and changed it to "DefaultPlayback" = "1". Now everything seems to work perfectly. Great!
