I'm a rookie at linux, but am trying to find an alternative to MS for an OS. Visual Fox is my primary database app so without it on linux i'm stuck.

It is possible to run VFP 8 using Wine. So far I have been unsuccessful in running it using cxOffice under Lindows, Mandrake 9 or Fedora 1.
As you're new to Linux (welcome! you're going to love it!), I'll direct you to the www.winehq.org site, where you can find many more detailed comments on getting VFP running under Wine:

Here're my suggestions to a "newbie" for using Wine. You may feel frustrated at first because of the learning curve, but all the work you do now will pay off big dividends later. So, I suggest you:
1) Read the online Wine documentation carefully (at the www.winehq.org) site.
2) Study the wine configuration file carefully. Test out the various options. Make sure all the paths are set properly for your system.
3) Learn where all the Wine files go on your system. The config file should point you to the user locations. Also find out where the wine executables etc. are.
In terms of Linux, the most important first thing to learn IMO is how file permissions work. If you don't learn this up front it will hound you later. Good luck and post back on how you did with it!
