Installing and launching UCINET 6

If you attempted to install the trial version of UCINET 6 into a new bottle as an "Other Application" using the installer file available on the Analytic Technologies website (UcinetSetup.exe), you probably experienced a crash when launching UCINET. It appears that UCINET 6 requires mdac 2.8 in order to launch successfully. The following installation procedure worked for me.

1) Install mdac 2.8 using CrossTie into a new WindowsXP bottle using the link on this webpage:
http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=1543

You should now have a bottle called "Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 Service Pack 1"

2) Go to Configure > Manage Bottles and select this bottle from the list on the left side of the window

3) Click the "Install Software ..." button

This should open a window to install a new application into the "Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 Service Pack 1" bottle

4) In the list on the left side of the window, select Unsupported Applications > Other Application

5) Click Select an installer > Choose Installer file ...

6) Navigate your file structure to wherever you have saved the UcninetSetup.exe installer file available from Analytic Technologies and select that file

7) Click Install

This will install UCINET 6 into your mdac 2.8 bottle.

This procedure was formulated by trial and error. It works for me. I don't promise it will work for you. I have not experimented with all of UCINET 6's features, so I'm not sure if supporting applications such as NetDraw will work properly or if the trial version of UCINET 6 can be registered. If you determine that the trial version of UCINET 6 can be registered or that supporting applications do or do not work, please post a reply! Also, I'd love to hear if this procedure is repeatable for other users.

Good luck!
