I can not get it to start up it all. (in mac os x 10.4.11 on macbook)

I think you must atleast have macbook pro.

on linux i don't have sound and i can't connect to any online servers.

At least I should could launch TMNations settings (it shouldn't require too much!), but I can't!

Neither the game nor the settings launch for me (it fails silently).

HOWEVER, this is also what happened when I tried it on Windows. The answer there was to install the DirectX update (dxwebupdate.exe), which worked.

Do you guys play it through steam or standalone?

I downloaded it with Steam and it does not run.
It crashes without an error.
The settings window crashes, too.

I've only tested under Steam, and as mentioned, it does not run. Nothing happens at all, no errors.

You need to install via the C4P file. It will do everything from download to install. It also configures it to run properly. You WILL need to go into settings->advanced, and change it from PC3 to PC2 in order for the invisible car bug to be fixed. It may also boot to a white screen some of the time, in which case quit and reopen. Also I was unable to create an account, but was able to login to an existing account. So create the account on a PC or Linux and then you should be able to login. Also Mac OS X users have reported runtime errors some of the time after finishing races. So it may crash after finishing a race, but if you're willing to be patient should run. As for Macbook or Macbook Pro, it should run fine on either.
