Total Annihilation on M1 macbooks

I can't get Total Annihilation to run on my M1 Macbook Pro. It shows the following warning in a windows popup:

Error: Environment Initialization Failed
Check your DirectX setup

I've tried selecting the option to add a desktop with a fixed size, and I've tried to install all three versions of DirectX into the bottle. Nothing worked.

(opening the TA map editor does work)

I managed to get it to run. The trick was to do this:

  • select the "custom command" option.
  • navigate to the totala.exe file (program files / gog / etc)
You will now see a path to the totala file in the input field. Now comes the important part:
  • and " -d" after the path. (don't add the quotation marks, just the space, the dash and the letter d).
This will tell Total Annihilation to open in windowed mode instead of full screen.

Seems to launch in windowed mode (21.2), but mouse cursor isn’t working so well.

Correction. Game works flawlessly on external display on M1 max MacBook Pro (Crossover 21.2). Issues only start if trying to run it on MacBooks own display.
