Works on Crossover 10 for Macs?

I will give an update when it gets through but so far the game has reached the update stage, and is in the process of downloading/updating.

The bottle I'm using has:

Crossover HTML Engine (Don't think it's necessary)
The Secret World (Beta Weekend #3 specifically)
DirectX 9 (Before I installed this, it wouldn't even load so this is probably the piece that is making it happen)

Can you be a bit more specific?

Really CrossOver 10?
What type of bottle/Win (xp/vista/other)?
Graphics settings?
virtual desktop?
and anything else you can think of?

I have now tried to install The Secret World into 3 different bottles. CrossOver 11.1, twice into copies of existing bottles and one newly created one with xp.
In all 3 bottles, I end up with the same problem: the Updater will start up after the installation and display a window of which I can sort of see the title bar but instead of the normal information it is meant to show it displays the desktop (if virtual desktop is on) or bits of whatever happens to be in the background.

I have 2 monitors and am wondering whether that could have something to do with it.

Here's what I did.

Configure -> Install Software...

Select 'Other Application'

Download the installer from TSW website and select it (setup.exe).

Use Vista Bottle.

Proceed.

The game will process to install...then fail after.

Next go Configure -> Manage Bottles

Select your Secret World bottle, click Install Software.

Find Direct X 9 (under Runtime Support Components) and install it in the Secret World bottle.

Now start up TSW work again. It should begin to update.

Will let you know if the update succeeds.

This ended up not working as my video drivers are out of date.

That might be a good sign that this will work for those that have a much more updated Mac than I do.

Thank you for the detailed description and sorry I am only responding now...

I just tried installing the release version and ended up with the same problem as described above...anybody want to chime in and venture a guess (or even know) what this could be?

Here the screenshot of how this looks (it reminds me of corrupted (graphic?) memory as I've seen similar when that happened):

I'd be prepared to put in quite some time to get this working...I think I fell in love with this game but running my machine in Bootcamp is not doable for me except for a few hrs/week.

Checking the Wine HQ, I can see that nobody got it working there either but nobody actually seems to have tried working with the released version.

After some more playing around with options and stuff, I found the following:
having a Wine desktop defined at 800x600 (anything bigger doesn't work), the patcher starts up and most of it is even visible and readable. It also seems to be downloading the patches. Atm, I am just observing and waiting to see if it downloads everything.

I certainly don't want to play the game at 800x600 but some tests have given me hope that even at a higher resolution where it displays nothing but gibberish clicking in the right places ends up doing the right thing. I noticed in Bootcamp that the Launcher/Patcher also has more graphical problems than the actual game and I hope it may work out the same way here. I wouldn't mind clicking at a guesstimated place in the mess that presents itself as Launcher window if the game itself then runs ok.

The 13 GB are loaded, the patcher did its thing and the game started. First, it failed with an error until I set the Wine desktop to at least 1280x800. At that resolution it complains about my graphics driver (I have a MacPro 3,1, os x 10.6.8, with a ATI Radeon HD 5870) being too old. It tells me I should have at least version 12.6 or later of the driver.

If I tell the game to continue it will play the sound ok but show me a black screen until it gets to the point where it wants me to login. Here, I can see the picture again and the 2 fields for user name and password are visible and can be entered.

However, this is the last I see...I don't know whether my data has been accepted, sent to the server or what is happening. Judging by the music, it didn't actually do anything, judging by the log, it did send something to the servers and received data back, hmm.

If these were just graphical glitches and they could be ironed out...any ideas on what I could change to make The Secret World happy?

Guys,

I don't know how to fix your problems, but I come here to tell you something :

JUST KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK ! Because I can't wait more to play this game ! You are pure genius, you did a lot and it seems you are not far from the end of this issue !

So let's go guys ! Do your best, we all love you :')

Thank you !

Thank you but not so close, unfortunately. I read through the AoC and AO (Age of Conan and Anarchy Online) forums and they had some severe problems that were never really fixed. As I can see the same files in the TSW directories that made such problems in the other 2 games, I am not sure that it will ever run.

Oh, I just remembered something. I also installed Flash because the menus in TSW seem to be Flash based. Looking at the way mods are written it is also done in Flash with xml configuration.

So...no further progress until now...also I wanted to actually play the game for a while :)

Need more input from more knowledgeable people.

It's amazing, I can't imagine a second it's impossible to run this game on mac.

I tried bootcamp on my 2 mac (iMac and MacBookPro) and the two refuse to let me do this... So it seems I can't do otherwise than using Wine or CrossOver...

You can't imagine how my geek side wants to play to this f*cking game :'(

What do we need to solve the problem ? I will find the person that can help us :'(

EDIT :

As far as I can tell the comments on Wine HQ were for the beta and it seems nobody went on to test the release version. I'd like our advocate here to turn up...probably he'd know more than we do.

What is wrong with your bootcamp setup? I play the game in bootcamp (this is the first game ever I have played in bootcamp and not just run it there to check the settings and other things) and it runs @30 fps, settings on ultra with directx11 (directx9 runs at an abysmal 5 fps with settings on low...).

It doesn't want to run well at all in Parallels (3 to 5 fps on average) :(

edit: oh, I forgot...I am quite prepared to put in more time to test stuff out but atm I am fresh out of ideas and my Wine knowledge isn't good enough to tweak the library settings
Also, don't worry about your English. It's plenty good enough (and who am I to say anything coming from Switzerland :) )

Hello :)

I'm afraid it's not really the good place to talk about my personal problems with bootcamp, but when it's asked that way... : In fact, my two macs tell that it's impossible to separate the hard disk because it's impossible to move the files. It advices me to format everything and do it again......... LOL.

So as I can't do that (yes I'm just an assh*le with computers), I try my chance with CrossOver :p

EDIT : I'm sorry, I soooo want to play that game that I downloaded CrossOver trial and the client on internet to try it on my own... I'm at the moment when you were with the 800x600 problem, excepted that I can't fix it haha.

EDIT 2 : Ok, two things, maybe it'll help !
I didn't read carefully what you said Eveline, so, I opened the game and I left it open in order to let it load the 13Gb. And I had this strange window completely destroyed (your attached filed). And I clicked on it and I moved it in the virtual desktop, and when I place it in the right hand top corner it's not "destroyed" anymore, and I can see the full loader... Maybe I found something ? ha.

EDIT 3 : I contacted the pre-customer support center, here my message with the images :

Good evening,

we are a couple of persons trying to make "The Secret World"
available on CrossOver. BUT. We have a problem.

When we launch the game, we have the client that upgrades the game,
but, the windows we see is totally destroyed

=> http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/360996trouble.jpg

But then, if I click in this windows in order to move the window, at
some places, we can totally see the client. BUT, it's not LIVE. It's
just a picture. If I want to see changes, I have to move a little
bit the window, and etc, and etc...

=> http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/885471issue2.jpg

Why ?

Sorry, I saw your edits only Today.

Did you receive any response?

My own experience with Funcom customer support has been excellent sofar but I wonder whether they have any interest in getting the game to work in CrossOver.

Just wanted to reply it's working for me. I also did the HTML option (first) also installed Directx 9 bottle into the TSW.

Super!

Can you tell us a bit more like system and configuration, graphic card used in your system, bottle type (XP or Vista), OS and CrossOver version?

My bad.

Got a brand spankin' new MBA 13" (cheaper model.) It's freaaaakin' awesome. :)

Mind you though, I had to delete the bottles and update to latest MacOS patches for it to successfully work. And now the interface gives me a white page instead of login page. (The other screens worked fine until now, now I get a white screen getting passed the videos and getting to that login screen.)

I installed a lot of things including the HTML, corefonts, did the HKEY edits on the bottle as well as SHWAPI (sp?) fix.

Had similar results in CrossOver 11 when I originally tested this game. In the beta for
CrossOver 12, the game should work using the following settings:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\TheSecretWorld.exe\Direct3D]
"RenderTargetLockMode"="disabled"
"StrictDrawOrdering"="enabled"
"UseGLSL"="enabled"

UseGLSL is a requirement, StrictDrawOrdering will fix the flicker problem,
RenderingTargetLockMode disabled should help a little.

Install Microsoft DirectX Runtime - Modern, or download d3dx9_36.dll - copy
d3dx9_36.dll to c:\windows\system32 and override the following:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\TheSecretWorld.exe\DllOverrides]
"d3dcompiler_43"="builtin"
"d3dx9_36"="native"
"d3dx9_43"="builtin"

I had to enable the Mac Driver to view the patcher.

Performance leaves a lot to be desired. None of the settings posted in the forum will
change that. I think performance problems are game related or has something to do with the
CPU/core handling in CrossOver. This isn't really a graphics-heavy game, especially at
lowest settings.

If you have the game installed - Create a new bottle, follow the above (or if you can
download the CrossTie), kill the patcher after it updates, run the game from the new
bottle.

Just did all you advised.
Without the Mac Windows Bypass, the patcher shows its "normal" weirdo stuff (for me it now displays just the first few mm at the top). It is easy to figure out when it has finished its tests though as it announces that with a sort of a gong. A click in the center of around the bottom third of the window should get the game going (there is a big "Play" button at that position, big enough so there is quite a bit of margin for error). If in doubt, remember the patcher window is more or less square.
In the game itself, I am now totally surrounded by the green overlay (as shown in the video but much worse now).

With the Mac Windows Bypass enabled, the patcher shows up perfectly normal and the game display is identical to above (incl. the green overlay) except it doesn't care about the settings for the virtual desktop anymore and fills both my screens :)

Something I noticed is that if you fail at the authentication and then press "esc" you can get into the options and set some video options there too. The options are now accessible from the game too which was not the case in CrossOver 11. This is very new, either because of your settings or because of running with the beta.

If you need to quit the game while on the Login screen and you can't see the row of buttons at the bottom. The Quit button is the left most one and it works :)

sevae, the game may hot be graphics heavy but it does some rather weird things with graphics that produce problems in Parallels too. Eg. objects are meant to show up as having a yellow border. In Parallels, it highlights the whole vertical area surrounding an object, eg. a whole wall so one sees a yellow wire frame around everything in that area. I've also seen remnants of the striping I first saw in Mass Effect 2 which was blamed on the ATI cards (except that some nvidia had it too).

Go to the game folder and create a .Backup for LocalConfig.xml
Remove the shader.cache file
Edit the LocalConfig.xml file and remove this line:
<HttpPatchFolder>TSWLive</HttpPatchFolder>
Run TheSecretWorld.exe with Debug Options +seh +loaddll

Upload or e-mail me the cxlog file.

Hmm...looks like Tonight I will be downloading patches instead of testing after Funcom changed the whole game by going b2p (no more subscriptions) as of Today.

I'm not having much luck on the Linux side of the pond; watching to see your progression.

Try again...something has changed in the game as I got over 20 fps (in Aretha, the place where everybody meets) in Parallels Tonight using the same setup as before where I never got above 5 to max 9 fps. Switching to CrossOver patching and testing now ...well... as soon as Windows is done installing the updates I had forbidden it to install.

hi there sevae
you seem to know a lot more than I about how crossover/wine works.
I tried to follow your instructions but could not find a "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\TheSecretWorld.exe\DllOverrides". So i created one and put the d3d stuff in as you wrote.
Also as far as I can see, there is no "LocalConfig.xml" file in the game folder or anywhere else, so I can not modify it.

I can start the game, log in and "play" a bit but the graphic glitches are so violent now that i can barley make out anything on the screen.

Could you be so nice and create a crosstie for this game with all the stuff you did, so I can get an exact replica of your settings? Would be great, cause I don´t think I can get this game to run correctly on my own.

Ignore the post about LocalConfig.xml. I was asking for a log file and it is not something
you need to edit.

There already is a CrossTie available for advocates. If you still have the same graphical
glitches after installing the game using the CrossTie - send me a friend request.
