Snow Leopard/Mavericks differences re: memory usage

First off, I'd like to mention that I'm playing on a late 2009 iMac with a 256MB ATI graphics card. So my system is quite below the requirements and, to be honest, I didn't really expect the game to run.

However, on my 10.6.8 partition it runs pretty seamlessly on low settings (with some graphical glitches), while on my 10.9.1 partition following the exact same install procedures and game settings, and using the same Crossover installation (13.1), the game hardly ever manages to load the first screen (after the Bethesda vid). On the few occassions I got past the start screen and then the loading screen (another potential moment to crash), the game then proceeds with the intro up to the moment of the dragon attack, at which point it freezes every time (I presume, because of the fire effects).

I know this is primarily a place to discuss Crossover, but I was curious, if anyone knows why Mavericks is having a hard time getting this game to run on a weak machine, while on Snow Leopard it's possible. Is there simply more stuff running in the background and taking up more ressources?

Cheers!
