First Play of Oblivion GOTY on Snow Leopard

Hi,
I like to share how I got Oblivion GOTY running on my PowerBook, it is one of the earlier Intel powered models (2.16 GHz, 2G RAM), not up to the specs of more recent models.

The GOTY setup.exe is protected by Securom so that it does not recognise the DVD as being in the Mac's drive.

The Digital Rights Management (DRM) software in this program
prevents it from running in CrossOver. If you are in a legal jurisdiction
which allows removal of such software, you may have luck running this
program. Unfortunately, CodeWeavers, because they are subject to the
Digital Millennium Copyright Act, will be unable to support you.

So far I have not attempted to install the expansions from the GOTY edition but I expect the same technique will work for them too.

To run the game I used the following settings:

  • Game setting, no HDR (this has been reported to give errors).
  • Game setting, no distant rendering (to reduce CPU load).
  • winecfg, graphics, disable all Window Manager options (if you don't do this the cursor just slumps down to the bottom of the screen).
The game does not use Securrom so there is no need to use a hacked exe for playing the game.

Game runs with no problems at an acceptable speed so far, I have left the sewers and progressed a little on the main quest. The CPU is notably higher than for Morrowind (just completed on CrossOver), the Mac's fan is running almost continuously.

So Oblivion on CrossOver gets a thumbs up from me.
Nick H.

Apologies for the edit.

Could you elaborate as to how you got around the DRM? I could not get any of the version of DT that I tried to work. Links would be ideal, but I'd love to know just the programs and versions that you used. Has anyone else had luck getting past the Securom DRM infecting the installer?

Thanks

Hi,

As you can see evidenced above by Caron's edit, and as stated in 'The Fine Print'
underneath the 'Post Comment' button when submitting a post to these forums (quote:
" Please refrain from the mention of DRM circumvention, such as 'no-cd patches' "),
you should not ask questions of this sort here, and it would be in contradiction
of DMCA to have anyone explain what you ask in this forum - the content would be
deleted if that happened. Please, read before you post!

That said, the best you can do in this regard, is check the WineHQ AppDB for clues...see;

Cheers!

My original post contained info on how to get install the GOTY version and I tried to avoid crossing the DRM tripwire but clearly failed.

Key thing to know is that once it's installed the GOTY version runs fine without any patched .exe (that can cause other problems anyway).
The edit is not strictly correct in this instance, the DRM just prevents you from doing a standard install under CrossOver, it does not prevent it running under CrossOver.
Why not see if you can get a used non-GOTY copy cheap and try installing with that? you could always sell it on afterwards.

BTW if you like Morrowind you may not like Oblivion, yes, the (un-modded) graphics are much better but it more of a console/action game than an RPG. I played it for a few hours and have gone back to Morrowind with a few extra mods.

Do you think this would work on the new Mac book pro's?

Cheers!

Sorry but I can't see were you explain how to install GOTY. Maybe it is just that I can't understand but my issue is that it won't detect the CD and you haven't explained how to overgo this issue, did you even have it?
