Oblivion Official Patches - Crash Upon Saved Game Load

Hello. I've searched the forums and couldn't find anything anywhere had addressed this, so here goes:

I'm using an iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo processor, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT, CrossOver Games 9.2, and currently running an unmodified version of Oblivion a.k.a. "vanilla". (although it's worth noting that I have been able to get mods to work)

Now the only issue that I initially had was the cursor getting locked at the bottom of the screen, which was fixed quickly. Afterwards, I noticed my game crashes whenever I try to return to the main menu and, coincidentally, when my character dies. Apart from those it was just the standard Oblivion bugs and glitches. I figured installing the latest official patch would do the trick. However once installed (I installed into the same WinXP bottle as Oblivion), upon starting a new game the application would crash moments later or would immediately crash upon trying to load a saved game.

I've tried upgrading to the latest CX Games version, but then Oblivion wouldn't run at all, and despite my best attempts I can't get it to work with Cider. The Unofficial Oblivion patch does not work without the official ones first, so that's a bust as well. While the four official plug-ins I have work great, the other four require an official patch, as well as Shivering Isles. The Construction Set runs great, but any plug-ins made with it also require a patch. So in other words, I have everything lined up to get Oblivion running great with any mod I want and etc., etc., however this is the one thing holding me back. Does anyone have any ideas about how to get the patch to work? Or is this something that just has to be lived with?

Thank you.

Not to be a nuisance, but I would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. I don't mean to sound desperate, but it is really annoying.

Which version of the game. I'm guessing since you didn't mention it's a CD version but there is a big difference if it is the steam version, so we need to know that if we are going to help.

Given said issue, I would reinstall into a completely new winxp bottle and apply the patch before you do anything else. Oblivion is a fickle mistress like that even on an actual windows machine. Since you had problems before anyway, I would say it isn't a long shot to say this will fix it. Your machine is a little on the low end which depending on what update could cause problems. There was one update that added a lot more physics that may have bee a problem for a low end machine. If you were playing without any update previously, I would say that's also possibly the problem.

Post back here with the version and we can help. I hope just reinstalling fresh will fix it.

Alright, I'll give that a shot. And yes, it's the CD version.

I've also read about Oldblivion. If I don't have any luck following what you've described, I'll toy around a little with that, and hopefully that might help with the processing. Thanks for the help :)

UPDATE: Well I tried with patches 1.2 and 1.1 (with and without Oldblivion), all with the lowest possible settings. 1.2 started well but at about the time the guards and emperor enter it crashes, and if the first autosave is loaded it crashes immediately. 1.1 alone worked the best, and it would load saved games without incident, but it would crash sporadically, usually when a menu was involved. I could never get it to progress past the "Class Selection" screen. Using Oldblivion with patch 1.1 or just Oblivion alone caused it to crash before getting to the main menu. The issues with the game crashing upon death or attempting to return to the main menu persisted throughout all tests.

Random crashes are sadly par for the course on Oblivion, especially unpatched. Those unfortunately may be nothing to do with crossover or at least the fact that you are running on crossover doesn't help an already finicky game. So seems like something added in 1.2 doesnt' work for you. There is a physics update in one of the patches and I don't know which it is. Tried looking it up on the official site but the release notes are no longer up. If 1.2 is the one in which they added it and I think it is, then you probably can't update with an older machine while running on crossover. Sporadic dropouts is probably the best you'll get sadly... Sorry but I have no idea what the crashing on death and return to the main menu would be. You can try taking out the sound file for the death music, but I don't think that's the problem.

Yeah, I had a feeling. No worries. I'm thinking about upgrading to a new machine within the near future anyway, so that's just another small incentive. Thanks for all the help anyway. Oh, and I deserve a smack on the head for this: way back when, I was afraid that one of my younger siblings would break the discs (which did happen) and used Toast to create ISOs just in case. Errors are probably coming from that, as well. I should get new copies anyway. It's certainly worth it. Again, thank you for the help.
