The only question I have is probably easy to answer. I don't seem to be able to put the game in full screen mode.

Fullscreen does not work unless you set it to exactly the same resolution as your desktop.
Also, you can't change the res from inside the game itself. You will need to edit the launch options for the game from the Steam GUI.
change it to something like this:
-novid -fullscreen -width 1280 -height 800
is there a way to get a 1440 resolution or is it not compatible with widescreen?
If you launch the game with -window, then you will be able to configure it for full-screen, widescreen, at your full resolution. Then quit and remove -window from the launch options. From then on, it should launch to full-screen with no problems.
TF2 by default has it set to Windowed mode, and even if you change it in game, it won't. You simply need to select TF2, then Properties, then Launch Properties and remove the -window , click okay and start. That should fix it
