Hello,
I am quite happy with the new release of Crossover Games. I first noticed improvements in Steam, which seems to be running better than before for me.
TF2 is also running nicely. My framerates seem to be somewhat better, though visually it's not much different. Running in full screen seems to be quite painless now, I am happy about that! Anyway, with my resolution at the maximum (1680 x 1050), the framerate was poor (10-20), but when I lowered it to 1344 x 840, it was holding around 40. I am using an Early 2006 iMac, by the way.
Here are a few of my complaints. Firstly, there is still no community overlay while playing. This is important to me. Another thing I noticed is that, while connecting to a server, my stats windows was not shown. Also, when the server tried to play a custom sound upon joining, it was quite choppy. Normal sounds in the game were fine, though.
Another very strange problem I noticed occured each time I died. When the camera is supposed to zoom in and show who killed me, all I saw was a bunch of text on a black background. I saw a URL, and some words from the game itself mixed in there, but it made no sense. I can provide a picture if need be. This strange image only displayed during the time when I'm told who killed me, and prevented me from seeing anything else but some of the HUD elements. It was kind of creepy ..
My other issue with the visuals, which I've mentioned elsewhere, is how very doll-like the characters look. In addition, the effects of the Übercharge and a person on fire are very subdued (no shiny glowing). I think this is because Crossover does not yet support DirectX 9? It's not a big deal, but it's something to note.
My last problem was with the mouse. When I play in Windows, I have the mouse sensitivity set quite high (between 13 and 15). When I play under Crossover, I set it all the way up to 20 (the slider will not go higher) and I still find myself having to move the mouse around needlessly. The mouse sensitivity as set by the OS is about the same in both OS X and Windows for me, so I'm guessing it's a problem with Crossover. It's not that big a deal though, and I know most people prefer much lower sensitivity anyway.
Um .. so I seem to have listed many problems, but I should say that overall it's a lot more enjoyable for me than it used to be. I typically switch into Windows to play, but I expect (once that creepy text problem is gone) I'll be playing much more often in OS X now! I seriously look forward to when I can just uninstall Windows .. each release comes closer to that point. Thank you so much for all the work you've all put into this!
Regards,
Brighid
