getting TF2 into steam

so i have all of the team fortress 2 files and game data. what i can't do is get it to run thru steam, it just adds the game as a shortcut. now fomr my understanding i need to have this game run thru steam so i can give it parameters to run properly, correct? because when i just launch the exe now the game is in the bottom right of the screen. so please help me figure this out, i love this game, i have to have it on my mac.

To my knowledge, you cannot run TF2 outside of Steam, unless you have a cracked / pirated version of the game. This is a TF2 thing, Valve doesn't ship the game as a standalone app, only as something you have to run through Steam.

Are you sure that you have a legit version of the game? If yes, where did you obtain it? Maybe we missed some way to get the game without using Steam.

FYI, if you have a shortcut to TF2 on your desktop the game WILL run, it will automatically start steam in the process if it is not started, now this is on windows, if steam is not started on a MAC I do not know if simply clicking on the TF2 icon will start it. You are better off simply starting the game within steam.

The resolution issue has nothing to do with that situation. That is a known issue for many players if they try to play in full screen NOT using the native resolution of their monitor. I have a 24" inch monitor with a native resolution of 1920*1200 if I choose fullscreen using any other resolution I loose 3/4 of my screen getting the same error you have.

Starting TF2 from a desktop or start menu entry should start Steam on CrossOver as well, if it is not running already.

yeah it's opening without steam. i'm really confused though as to why. well let's just say the copy i have is from a friend, so maybe that's why. i also tried to put the game files i have into my games folder into steam, and that didn't work either. i'm probably just out of luck, but any other feedback anyone may have is appreciated, and thanks for the help already guys.
