Optimal OS X settings for performance?

Hello,

First let me say if I have a mac today (purchased Friday)... your software is the cause. I have wanted a mac for years but had no interest in dual booting. When I found out about your product via others playing TF2 and that you officially supported the game it was a no brainer.

So no pressure on you guys ;) .

My questions if I want the best performance possible for my game I guess like Windows I should have as little as possible running in the background. Where can see what is running? Is using the force quit the equivalent of Task Manager? Or do I have another tool to make sure only crossover and steam are running?

Thank you.

So far this is what I get:

I only have a maximum selectable setting of 1024*768 and if I try to put anything higher via launch options the game does not load, the icon TF2 loading appears, then disappears and nothing.

I have all visual settings at the lowest in advanced and I am running dxlevel 8. I get very bad framerates.

I do not see the in game chat, just bars.

If I try to run in fullscreen mode the screen loads up as if it will be full screen and then a flicker and the screen while still in fullscreen mode has moved and I only see 1/4th of the game the rest is offset and not visable.

A) How can I run higher resolution?
B) Any tips on improving framerates?

More info. I can run in fullscreen but only by choosing: -fullscreen -w 1920 -h 1200

The framerates I get are nothing higher than 11fps with minimum video settings, basically unplayable :( .

Activity Monitor is the equivalent of the Task Manager.
You can find it under Applications | Utilities | Activity Monitor

Which Mac do you have? (esp. which graphics card)

rik

iMac 2.4 duo core, 2 gigs of ram and the radeon HD 2600 256mb.

Thanks for the tip.

Unfortunately, the new video chipset and driver with the new iMac is giving us grief. If you just got it, I expect it came with Leopard. Is that right? Have you applied all Software Updates (the Apple menu at the upper left -> Software Update)?

Rather than specifying the resolution in your launch options, you can pick it in the game's video settings. Note that you may need to switch between Normal and Widescreen to see all available resolutions.

You can experiment with the advanced video settings to see if reducing them gives you better frame rates.

If you're willing to be a guinea pig, and since you're a customer, I suggest you open a ticket about the poor performance on this new iMac. We can then have a more in-depth back and forth, giving you experimental stuff to try, asking you to collect diagnostic information, etc. That would really help us out in figuring out why these blasted new Macs are causing so much trouble. Thanks.

This will fix the in-game text. The default font is unreadable by Mac OS X, which is why you see only lines.
