So far i have Steam installed, along with TF2 and updates. At first I could not see anything on the screen. Now I have it in windowed mode and I can now see the VALVE intro with sound.

Now the problem starts after that. The screen stays black, I still have the sound and I can move the mouse over where the buttons are supposed to be and hear them as well. What launch string do I need to use? Or how do I fix that problem? Here is my current one

 -w 1680 -h 1050 -window -dxlevel 90

I have tried -dxlevel80 and 81.....

slipped my mind.... I am running Ubuntu 8.04 and i have an Ati Radeon x800 mobility card (sucks i know).

A while back I was running an acer laptop with an X1700 mobility (which from what I can tell is an overclocked X700) on Ubuntu 8.04. I encountered a similar sounding problem to what you have.

I fixed it by disabling compiz (which is enabled by default in 8.04) and removing the Ati restricted ubuntu driver and installing the ATI binary driver from amd.com.

Take a look under tips and tricks for how to disable compiz and there are also loads of ubuntu forum threads on the ati driver installation.

The "black opengl" window is also well covered on the ubuntu forums.

You may find just disabling compiz and switching to metacity sorts you out.
