Steam does *not* load

I posted this in another forum as well but what the hay decided to post here for the sake of it.

When I try to launch Steam via my "CrossOver Games applications folder", It doesn't load. It doesn't even try. I'm trying very hard not to start cussing here, but it's like having a friend that suddenly stops talking, a TV that blinks on then off, an iPod that plays five seconds of an mp3 then stops.

It is the very definition of frustrating.

The same happens with TF2. In both instances, the icon shows up in my dock, then just as immediately goes away. It retreats. It runs away. I'm holding a pig flavored bone in its direction, waiting anxiously, but it just runs away like I'm about to euthanize. WHY?!

I personally have no clue. The only way I've EVER been able (month ish ago when I had the demo.. and now with full version) to get Steam to actually LOAD is when I go to Manage Bottles > Applications > Team Fortress 2, then click on "Repair or Remove." Then this loads up Steam (which, as we all know, emulation or no, takes for goddamn ever) and then instead of being able to navigate around, I get a "THis will remove all your contents etc etc" (Delete) (Cancel) --- and of course hitting cancel just closes Steam and and nothign is running in Windows as far as Wine is concerned, even my Win(e)dows system tray is empty again.

To get Steam to actually run and stay up I have to Manage Bottles > Applications > Steam, "Repair or Remove." This brings up a "(Repair) (Remove)" dialogue, and if I click "Repair" (Yes) (Yes), only THEN will steam run.

This is FAR too convoluted a process than I see other people going through. Any help here?

Do you have any input managers like (especially) the Logitech Control Center? If yes, try to remove them. LCC is known to break many applications, including CrossOver.

Oh, balls. Serious?

I guess I'll have to find a workaround to using a Logitech mouse, then.

Thanks for the prompt response!

P.S. - Is there a chance of this being fixed at any point or is this out of your hands (and in Logitech's)?

It is a bug in Logitech's mouse center, so technically they have to fix it. However, we're investigating possible workarounds, and I think Ken has found one, so the next crossover release may work around the issue(maybe the workaround is in the office-focused CrossOver 7.0 release already, but I am not sure.

We have had users report that ControllerMate, USB Overdrive, or Steermouse are good third-party mouse drivers.

Also, you should be able to launch Steam using the Run Command dialog, accessible from CrossOver's Programs menu. However, this is tedious.

I have fixed this problem. LCC 2.4 saw Logitech remove their intrusive APE framework, but then they introduced this Application Scroll Enhancer loader, so it causes the same crashes in some programs. All you have to do is remove these files from LCC 2.4 and then everything will work fine:

/Library/InputManagers/LCC Scroll Enhancer Loader
/Library/Application Support/Logitech/LCC Scroll Enhancer.bundle
/Library/ScriptingAdditions/LCC Scroll Enhancer

It worked perfectly for me, and I can confirm this after having LCC and CrossOver Games running for a month with no problems. (Note that some applications might have less smooth scrolling, but I haven't noticed any difference, and it's something I can live with.)

EDIT: I've just found that Logitech has released 2.6 drivers. It's very probable that they've fixed this issue, so feel free to test them out. I'm not sure I want to take the plunge. You might want to see if you can delete these files mentioned here if it crashes again. I've posted the Release Notes here:

Version 2.6:
Support for new mice and keyboards
Addition of a "Restore Default Settings" button for all button and key assignments
Battery level display in the "General" page for each cordless device
Independent tracking speed settings for each mouse or trackball. In prior versions of LCC tracking speed was a global setting.
Simplified process for swapping left and right mouse buttons
Fix for a compatibility issue that prevented Growl from displaying notifications
Fix for compatibility issues with MPlayer, iBiz(tm) (from IGG Software), and Desktoptopia(tm)

Version 2.6 works fine for me without any adjustments or tweaks needed. Try updating and it should fix your issue.
