TF2 crashing after 5-10 mins in-game

I posted a support ticket about this, but am hoping that someone who chances by may have the answer :) :

In TF2, after playing on a populated server for 5-10 mins, I get a pretty consistent crash; sometimes just the game freezing, something just closing abruptly and occasionally freezing such that I need to SSH in to kill it.

This is running Crossover Games 7.0, it persists after trying all sorts of things:

  • Changing 'OffscreenRenderingMode' in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3d (fbo, pbuffer, etc, no setting fixes the issue)
  • Running in -dxlevel 80, dxlevel 81, 90, 95
  • Running Windowed/Fullscreen
  • Turning all settings to the lowest in Video Options
  • Turning all settings to the highest
  • Disabling sound/voice
  • Reinstalling TF2 in a new steam install in a new bottle
  • Changing from win2000 to winxp
  • Changing to the latest Unsupported version of Crossover Games

I have a new 17" Macbook Pro (MacBookPro4,1; Penryn 2.6Ghz C2D 4gb RAM, 512MB GeForce 8600M GT, 1920x1200).

It seems to occur much less often when I start my own empty server or run through the developer commentary; but I've had crashes there too.

I replied at http://www.codeweavers.com/support/tickets/browse/?ticket_id=647313

Hi!

I have the same problem. I am running Steam with TF2 on lastest CrossOver Mac Trial (6.2.1)
Configuration:

15'' MacBookPro 2,5Ghz 4Gb Ram 512 GeForce 8600M GT 1440x900.
Xp Bootle

I have the lastest update from Apple Site.

P.D With problems or not Sicerelly great CrossOver!!! :D

okay, so it seemed that you said it worked after you reapplied the os. I have the same problem, and upgraded to 10.5.3 from 10.5.2, but it still crashes. my frame-rate is lower as well. it's really frustrating... any ideas?

also, what is a kernel? no idea, i was wondering if that might be my problem.

According to the experiences reported in that ticket Stefan referred to, you might want to reapply the Combo update for Leopard, which includes all of the changes made between 10.5.0 and 10.5.3.

Here's what Dictionary.app has for "kernel": the most basic level or core of an operating system of a computer, responsible for resource allocation, file management, and security.

So, it's the kernel's responsibility to prevent user-level applications from crashing or freezing the computer. It might have bugs. Or, more likely in this case, some other kernel-level software such as a graphics driver might have bugs.
