I was able to successfully install TaxCut 2003 Standard and was able to run it. The electronic registration doesn't work, but I don't care about that. I am using the download version of TaxCut, not installed from CD.
I couldn't get the updates to download - it would hang and I'd have to reset CXOffice. I downloaded the updates from the taxcut.com website, and installed them as an application through OfficeSetup, and it killed the program. It would no longer run. I then uninstalled TaxCut and reinstalled without loading updates and it ran fine again. Fortunately for me, none of the forms I am using needed updates.
I tested this in parallel with my NT4 laptop to make sure the numbers came out the same on both systems (linux system: Slackware 9.0, FVWM, 2.4.21 kernel). There are no math errors specific to linux - the refund was identical on both machines.
I printed the form with no major problems from CXOffice. The only issue is that I couldn't change the default printer from "lp", even by going into the Printer Setup screen in TaxCut. It would let me pick a new printer, but then forget what I told it and revert back to the default "lp" printer. This wasn't a major deal for me, but I wanted to use the high-speed laser printer on the network.
I did not test the State Return, since Oklahoma's form is so simple that I do it by hand. I also did not test electronic filing - I'd rather mail the forms in.
The Help screens and links do not work. The window opens as it should, but nothing is displayed. It appears to be some sort of html-based help system. Some brief investigation indicates that there are case-sensitive file naming issues. I copied the help folder to an smb share to eliminate case-sensitivity, and there are no problems browsing the help from Netscape. I can't get the hot-links in TaxCut to recognize the pages I have open in my browser, so I can't get the specific help I'm looking for without some major searching.
Overall, I'd rate this at a Bronze level - maybe even Silver. There are some minor irritants, such as the updates, printing, and help, but nothing I couldn't live without.
