TaxCalc's Blank Window

TaxCalc is an excellent application for making annual tax returns to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in the United Kingdom.
When I first switched to a Mac in 2006, and asked Acorah, the makers, whether they were considering producing a version for Mac OS X, it was they who suggested Crossover.
Having recently succumbed to Codeweavers' inducement to purchase the latest version of Crossover at a significant reduction, I have successfully installed two editions, 2008 and 2010, of TaxCalc on my iMac. There is one, huge, problem. When they open, they present a completely blank screen, instead of the opening screen requesting a tax file &c.
The menu functionality is there: I have successfully created, saved and opened a tax file. But the main window remains infuriatingly blank.
What's missing?

It's hard to know. You can collect a diagnostic log and peruse it. It will be quite technical, but something might jump out at you, like a missing DLL. We have some tips for getting unsupported apps working better here.

Good luck.

You beauty!

I took the very first tip—install IE6 in the same bottle—and lo! and behold! TaxCalc has a face!

Now to see if the rest works as it should.

Thanks a zillion.

I've just found this topic having solved the problem for myself only this morning! (Should have looked harder yesterday.) My solution is exactly the same - install IE6 in a bottle then install TaxCalc in the same bottle.

Would it be possible to put this solution in the App Index, which currently shows only "Untested"?

CrossOver is a fantastic application, and now I have TaxCalc and Quicken working in CrossOver, I will rarely need to run the virtual machine in Parallels. Many thanks.

PS - TaxCalc is itself a brilliant application; I thoroughly recommend both.

Hi,

Glad to hear you got it working! You should be able to submit a medal ranking
yourself (I think?)...click on the 'Submit Rank' link on the Details page here,
and you can can submit your rank accordingly. That should clear the 'Untested'
standing when the database next refreshes ;)

Cheers!
