Steam periodically gets stuck at the "Connecting to Steam Account: xxx" screen

I've been having issues with getting Steam to get past the "Connecting to Steam Account: xxxx", it just sits there forever. I believe this screen is shown while the Steam client logs into the service. This isn't a new issue, it seems to come and go in spurts. Unfortunately, it makes it hard to troubleshoot properly because Steam will suddenly start working properly. When the issue starts happening, even installing Steam into a new bottle doesn't fix it. Both Crossover and WINE are affected.

Steam/logs/connection_log.txt:

If I add -tcp to the end of the command in my launcher:

This appears to be a common issue when I look at the entry for Steam on the WINEDB website. They suggest running WINE with 'taskset -c 0', limiting WINE to one CPU core.

On both Crossover and WINE, Steam actually logs in and works if I do this. However, game performance is terrible as it's limited to using only one CPU core. I can use taskset to set Steam to use all cores at this point, but it doesn't affect the games that are launched; they are still locked to one core.

Here's what the connection_log.txt says when I use taskset and Steam is able to open fully:

[2015-09-04 00:43:37] Log session started

[2015-09-04 00:43:39] [1,2] RecvMsgClientLogOnResponse() : [U:1:43161074] 'OK'

And what the terminal window outputs:

And now, after trying a good 15 times before writing out this post, Steam just decided to connect properly, even with letting it use all cores.

I've yet to find an answer in either the WINE forums or here. The earlier threads here seem to indicate a temporary outage that isn't WINE/Crossover specific. This isn't the case with my PC as I am able to log into Steam on Windows without a problem. Also, the Steam for Linux client logs in fine, it's just the Windows client under WINE/Crossover that has the problem.

Thanks!

Does this get you anywhere?

BTW you are missing a system library somewhere. Nss was one that bit me (I think it was that). On 64 bit systems you will need the 32bit one too. Being about to start work, I'll have to post later a few more things when I can Google them for you.

One thing I would look for is the CLI tool that checks for missing system components. Going thru that should pick up your missing lib.

This was what I was trying to remember:

https://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/diag

Wow, that's a great start! Thanks a bunch, I'll check both links when I get home from work.

Thanks for the suggestions earlier. I'm having some issues with the missing libraries. I'm running Mint 17.2 x64 and this is what I'm encountering:

$ ./bin/cxdiag --debug

$ sudo apt-get install libssl0.9.8:i386
libssl0.9.8:i386 is already the newest version.

And from the first link you provided:

libgl1-mesa-dri is already the newest version.
libegl1-mesa-drivers is already the newest version.
E: Unable to locate package mesa-dri-drivers
(same thing when I try mesa-dri-drivers:i386)

I'll continue to play around with it.

Thanks again!

Edit:

Update: Installed the libtiff4 package from http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/i386/libtiff4/download.

And from http://askubuntu.com/questions/121489/what-has-changed-in-libssl-0-9-8o-7ubuntu2-so-that-it-now-breaks-my-aventail-cli:

sudo apt-get install libssl0.9.8
sudo ln -s /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libssl.so.0.9.8 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libssl.so.0.9.7
sudo ln -s /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libcrypto.so.0.9.8 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libcrypto.so.0.9.7

Now the missing library errors are gone when I run cxdiag --debug. (yay)
Hopefully this fixes it :) Thanks.

Edit2:

I just ran Steam from Terminal again and noticed there were more errors:
```p11-kit: couldn't load module: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/pkcs11/p11-kit-trust.so: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/pkcs11/p11-kit-trust.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory```
So, I ran
```$ sudo apt-get install p11-kit:i386```
However, it said the following:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
gnome-keyring p11-kit python-ubuntu-sso-client seahorse

That really didn't seem like a great idea.
So, I ran:
```$ sudo apt-get download p11-kit:i386```
Then manually extracted it into my system.  Now, no more errors.
Now it's the waiting game to see if the problem returns.
@MN
You really did not need to do all of that. Had you only posted the results of running cxdiag, I or someone elese, would have told you that you are fine. In the cases of the openssl libraries you were already set. cxdiag goes through a list of versions and in your case it found ibcrypto.so.0.9.8 and libssl.so.0.9.8 which it can use just fine.
libtiff.so.4 was not important for running Steam either. Sometimes things break with Steam. Any program that is a moving target can, at some point, break and not run on Wine. It does not mean that you dig and start messing with libraries on your system. Those symlinks you created are useless and can be even detrimental is there are any breaking incompatibilities between openssl 0.9.8 and 0.9.7.x. For example some application tries to use some function that exists in 0.9.7.x but the function may have been renamed or changed (as in, it takes fewer or more arguments) in 0.9.8.
It also looks like version 4.0.0 broke backwards compatibility to the 3.x series. So simlinking would not be advised.
http://upstream.rosalinux.ru/versions/libtiff.html
This reminds me to file a bug for the libtiff4 message. No modern distribution offers this ancient version, so the message is useless. Either they start using a more modern version or simply suppress that warning
To get /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/pkcs11/p11-kit-trust.so you install p11-kit-modules:i386
If it complains about missing /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/pkcs11/gnome-keyring-pkcs11.so install this package: libp11-kit-gnome-keyring:i386
That is good to know, thank you. I haven't had time to play any games, but from your reply, it seems that the issue will likely return. I'd be surprised if I am the only one encountering this problem. I figured these forums would at least have a couple threads about the issue. Maybe it is an isolated issue with my machine and I just need a reinstall of my OS. I've probably caused a headache waiting to happen with my libraries anyway.
Thanks for the heads up, I'll do a reinstall of my OS when I get some time.
I still don't think this affects everybody. This morning I fired up a bottle where I have Steam for Windows and Deus Ex: Human Revolution installed. I made sure to update Steam before doing anything else. It updated and ran almost fine - steamwebhelper still croaks occasionally but it's not a huge problem. Steam continues to work. I even ran Deus Ex: HR and that worked fine as well. Had to tell wine to fool this game into thinking it was running on Windows 7, otherwise performance would suffer. I saw this sort of thing with XCOM Enemy Unknown in the past.
So far, I think the problem you are having affects only Linux Mint users and maybe not all of them or we'd see them here on the forum.
I'm pretty close to throwing in the towel here. I installed Elementary OS 0.3.1, wiping out Mint. Steam still will not launch for me.
When I installed the Nvidia proprietary driver for my GTX 670, I chose the "recommended, tested" driver.
I had an overclock going, so I went into my BIOS and reset to optimized defaults. Steam still will not launch.
With my new install of Crossover, I installed Steam into a new bottle. Everything goes through as normal, dependencies are installed, Steam launches and downloads the "update". I select "Login into existing account" then enter my credentials. Steam Guard does not appear, which it should.
I read on another forum that another user was able to fix his issue by switching up his Nvidia driver. I then added xorg-edgers PPA and installed the 355 driver. I verified the driver works properly, then tried Steam again to no avail.
Anything come of this?
I have been having this issue forever with wine steam.exe, and it does appear your correct in setting steam to run on 1 core and it works. However performance is bad doing this. Gotta be a way to get around this? Can steam.exe be changed to 1 core on the fly without affecting wine to get it past the login screen?
I'm afraid it still doesn't work for me.
Regarding locking the wine processes to one core, I found that even after using taskset to tell the whole wine process tree to use all cores (after getting to my Steam library screen), I still had to run taskset after launching a game in order for the game to use all the cores. It's like all processes spawned remember the setting that the command was initially launched with. It worked, but it was a dirty hack.
So far, I think the problem you are having affects only Linux Mint
users and maybe not all of them or we'd see them here on the forum.
Just to add some confusion into the mix:
No, it doesn't just affect Linux users. I am on a Mac (10.8.5, CO 14.1.6) and have just run into the same problem. I haven't run any debug stuff (yet) but this is what happened:
  1. started Steam in the virgin Steam bottle I keep around -> it updated, started and connected fine
  2. duplicated the bottle for a game I wanted to test install and try out. Doing that, I made a typo and added 2 consecutive spaces (" ") in the bottle title.
  3. This ran into the known (on Macs) and (supposedly fixed) problem where I ended up with a duplicated bottle without any links to the programs in it
  4. fixed that by renaming the bottle
  5. ran Steam -> got stuck on connecting
Steam in this bottle will not connect.
Now, this may just be a red herring because of the connection to a Mac only bug in CrossOver but just maybe, it could help in pin pointing where the problem could be.
On Linux, my bottle has no spaces in its name. Also, the problem followed me to elementary OS, so it isn't limited to Mint. Also logging into Steam works every time until my first reboot.
Have you guys checked that Steam is not still running even if there's no window shown? Did you look at the process list in the task manager?
Yes, I always do. Been bitten too many times :) and often when something is/seems "stuck" the WineLoaders don't quit.
The taskset trick works reliably for me: not just setting it to run on one core, but also setting it to run on all cores but core 0.
