Problem connecting to internet?

Hi everyone,

I've been trying to install Steam to play some games through CXG, but after the install, when I try to open it, it says 'Updating Steam', then 'Error- Steam.exe (Main Exception): to run Steam you must first connect to the internet'.

I am most definitely connected to the internet- can someone explain what's happening?
I have a hunch it is my school's network, but I am not sure- I can check it again at home at the end of the week, but anyone got any ideas?
