[Solved] HotS crashing often?

SOLUTION

for Kerrigan Bonus Objectives, this seemed to work, from the WineHQ
bug:

"It's essentially a font issue. The game expects "arial.ttf" to
exist in
"c:\windows\fonts". If you already have that somewhere else on your
system just
creating a symlink seems to work fine, otherwise perhaps installing
the MS
corefonts in the prefix may help. Aside from "arial.ttf" I've also
seen the
game look for "courbd.ttf". That one doesn't seem to be required for
the Level
Up animation, but it might be needed at some later stage in the
game."

from within CX, install the Core Fonts into your SC2 bottle.

Anyone else getting lots of crashing in the HotS campaign?

thanks!

My guess is that you're getting those crashes during the mission "HARVEST OF SCREAMS", on the icy planet, while trying to do the secondary objectives. If that's the case, you're not alone. There is a thread here:

I've already sent a ticket to Codeweavers, feel free to write one yourself.

actually, it's from completing the Bonus Objectives on Char before getting 100 eggs.

so it seems to be an error with the Bonus Objectives.

thanks!

what about the second Char mission? i can't even really start it. there's certainly the Bonuses issue, but i feel like my install is also crashing with random sound loss/issues.

i installed Core Fonts through CX and can conform that i was able to successfully achieve a bonus objective with Kerrigan onscreen.

unfortunately, it seems whatever issues i'm having go beyond just this issue.

thanks!

Paul,

Looking at your ticket I thought you might be experiencing the same issues I had after installing HotS, particularly when you mentioned loss of sound just before the crash.

Following the instructions in: "SC2 Crashes on Ubuntu Maverick/Kernel 2.6.32 or Ubuntu 12.04" article in Tips and Tricks fixed it for me, might work for you even though you aren't running Ubuntu?

echo 0|sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope

Only other difference I can think of is I don't have the OpenGL instruction in the registry.

Liam

thanks Liam! i'll give it a look and report back!

edit so far it seems to be slightly better, but it's still occurring. did you do anything else besides adding that line?

thanks!

edit2 i've tried lowering my graphics settings now and that seems to really help. i just played a good amount trying to crash it like usually do and it didn't crash.

so there might be hope here. =) thanks! i still hope to hear back about what Crossover might say from my crash logs. i'm even on a different Kernel than the one listed for this bug.

thanks again!

edit 3 ok, it can't be that fix because terminal returns this error:

sysctl: cannot stat /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope: No such file or directory

i'm on Chakra Linux, an offshoot of Arch. i guess the internals are more different. thanks though! will keep chugging away at it!

edit 4 it seems to help a great deal if i drop the shaders to High instead of Ultra, much more resilient to things that would have crashed it earlier. but it still occurs if i, say, open the menu while in a mission. =/

dropping to the Medium setting again increases stability, so i can open the menu in campaign and it not crash.

edit 5 ok, so i can either drop shaders and settings to Medium, and have Textures at Ultra. or drop Textures to High, and shaders to High. so maybe it's a VRAM issue?

edit 6 ok! got it! derpy as i am, naturally the problem was an unstable overclock setting. adjusted, and all my problems have now vanished. =)

thanks all, sorry for the trouble and glad we fixed that other Bonus Objective bug!
