BlizzardDownloader.exe crashed during update to 1.0.3

I tried to start SC2 today and found that Blizzard apparently released a new patch.

After a few seconds, I get a dialog saying that BlizzardDownloader.exe crashed. Any ideas?

I have the latest cxgames (9.1.0), updated my linux kernel to 2.6.35 and the game did work flawlessly for several days.

Regards,

When I start the game from the console:

"$HOME/.cxgames/Starcraft II_ Wings of Liberty/desktopdata/cxmenu/StartMenu.C^5E3A^5Fusers^5FPublic^5FStart^2BMenu/Programs/StarCraft+II/StarCraft+II"

I always get the same output:

%S: %s_create_dc_and_bitmapwine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x266b44c (thread 003a), starting debugger...
%S: %s_create_dc_and_bitmap%S: %s_create_dc_and_bitmap%S: %s_create_dc_and_bitmap%S: %s_create_dc_and_bitmap

The address is stable, only the thread number changes. How can I connect to the debugger and what should I do then to locate the problem?

I got the same issue.

Close the dialog and the download continue and crash at when the file is downloaded.

for me it stopped at 49%, 55%, 56%, 70%.....

When it stops close sc2 updater, and kill the process blizzard updater (it should become a zombi process) or you won't be able to finish the update.

5 or 6 files have to be downloaded re lauch sc2 every times it stops/crah. When all need files will be downloaded, it will update.

I tried 50 times. So far, I could get two different behaviors:

  1. When I start the game, I get the update screen and 1-2 seconds later, BlizzardDownloader.exe crashes. When I click "Close", the download starts and stops at 49%. When I look at the process list, I see:

winewrapper.exe --wait-children --start -- C:/users/Public/Start Menu/Programs/StarCraft II/StarCraft II.lnk
/opt/cxgames/bin/wineserver
C:\windows\system32\services.exe
C:\windows\system32\winedevice.exe MountMgr
C:\windows\system32\explorer.exe /desktop
C:\Program Files\StarCraft II\StarCraft II.exe
[BlizzardDownloa] <defunct>

Download hangs for more than five minutes (after that I killed the downloader).

  1. When I restart without deleting the sc2 downloads, the updater usually exits 2-3 seconds after I close the crash dialog or it lives 5--10s longer if I don't close the crash dialog. When that happens, only these processes are left:

winewrapper.exe --wait-children --start -- C:/users/Public/Start Menu/Programs/StarCraft II/StarCraft II.lnk
/opt/cxgames/bin/wineserver
C:\windows\system32\services.exe
C:\windows\system32\winedevice.exe MountMgr
C:\windows\system32\explorer.exe /desktop
[BlizzardDownloa] <defunct>

  1. If I delete all sc2 files, the download starts and stops again at 49% and 3.8MB left.

I found a solution after starting the installer 144 times!

Start cxinstaller and install IE6! If IE6 is available, BlizzardDownloader.exe won't crash anymore, the download will start as expected and complete successfully.

Hi Aaron, glad you found a solution. I've added your work around to the Tips & Tricks section so that anyone else experiencing this issue can find the solution.

Uh. There is no auto installer for ie6 right?

I don't get it. ..I tried to install ie6...but it says a newer version is already installed. Even if I create a new bottle it's the same drill....grrrr...

well..I runned my bottle with wine 1.2....

It should work to install Microsoft HTML Rendering Engine 6 (or maybe 7), listed under Community Supported Applications.

Can anyone confirm that this works? If so I'll update the Tips.

Yup i just did the 1.0.3 upgrade and it worked perfectly didn't hand. Using crossover games 9.1 for linux

Also i didn't have to install IE6 think the crossover html rendering engine takes care of that.

Ok. Thanks, I've updated the Tip.

Can you add to the tip how to make the debugger stack trace visible? See my blog for an example stack trace: http://blog.pdark.de/2010/08/19/updating-starcraft-2-to-1-0-3-on-opensuse-11-3-solved/

If you see that, then the gecko engine crashed while executing some JavaScript.

Done.
