Why the mission clock may differ from real-time

I have noticed that timed mission achievements on Hard or Brutal settings operate at 20% and 34% faster than real-time, respectively. At first I thought this was an issue with CPU stepping but that turned out to have little to no effect.

This 'feature' in the game does not seem to be adjustable in Campaign mode, so beware of the difference from real-time.

This is because the game runs faster than regular time. In the campaign it is set to fast or faster, which is 20% or ~33% faster than normal. If you play a custom game against the computer or a person you will notice that you can change the speed of which the game plays at ranging from slower to faster in the menu, where at normal speed one real life second is equal to one in-game second. Any speed other than that and the timer will run at a different speed. Faster is the standard speed in online multiplayer, where the game is 33% faster than normal speed.
