SC2: blank screen on videos and game play.

I've just reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and the new Crossover games 10.0 on my notebook (Lenovo 400s with Intel X4500M GPU) and having problems with StarCraft 2.

The problem is after I hit Play in the campaign the screen is blank, but I can still hear sound (people talking about the mission). If I hit ESC then the loading screen comes up for the next section. I can get all the way up to the game but the main game screen is blank, all I can see is the information windows around the bottom and sides, not the main playing area.

It seems like a graphics problem, should I be upgrading my graphics drivers somehow? If so how?

This might help to solve the issue:

  • Open a console and edit /etc/default/grub
  • Change the line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nopat"
  • Save and exit then run: sudo update-grub

I had problems playing Starcraft II in Windowed mode, but full screen mode works well for me. I was also able to increase performance by disabling compiz when I play. When the screen goes blank, try pressing CTRL + Alt + F6 to switch to console mode, and then CTRL + Alt + F7 to switch back to Desktop mode. The graphics in Starcraft II become distorted on my computer sometimes, and this clears it up for me.

Updating your graphics driver might solve your problem as well. I don't know much about Intel graphics adapters, but if the driver comes with a utility to change graphic settings, try turning on some of the advanced features. I set all the 3D settings for my ATI Radeon graphics card to the highest settings, which increased the performance of Starcraft II, and other games.

I hope this helps.
