i'm hitting an issue where battlenet doesn't recognise my version of the game. this happened in windows xp and i solved it by manually downloading the patch and installing it. how do i do that in osx with crossover?

Well, you would basically follow the same procedure as you would under Windows.
If you just need to be able to run an arbitrary .exe file in a bottle, use the Run Command dialog. See the bottom of CrossOver's Programs menu.
If you need to manually copy files to a particular location on the C: drive, you just need to locate the folder in your Mac account which corresponds to the bottle's virtual C: drive. In the Manage Bottles windows, on the Advanced tab, there's a button to open that folder in the Finder. Just so you know, it's located here:
(your home folder)/Library/Application Support/CrossOver Games/Bottles/<bottle name>/drive_c
