Black screen when playing Steam or GOG version.

Both versions start up, but when I go to fly the first mission, I get a black screen. I hear the instructor talking and the background music plays, but nothing else happens. I'm running Mint 17.3 with 8GB RAM and an AMD Radeon (TM) R9 M360 graphics card.
