Unsupported build available to CodeWeavers account holders - give experimental Star Wars TOR support a try!

An unsupported build of CrossOver is available now to those with a CodeWeavers website account. This build includes experimental support for SWTOR. This build is unsupported, meaning we strongly encourage you to separate your other CrossOver usage from what you do with this build.

To access the swtor build, log into the CodeWeavers website and navigate to the 'Downloads' section of your account. Click 'Unsupported Downloads' and choose the installer for either Mac or Linux, depending on your system. Remember - it is not recommended that you run software other than swtor with this build.

If this build works for you - tell us about it here, and enjoy!

If it does not, please let us know. We hope to have 'official' swtor support in the future. For now, we hope this will help those who wish to play swtor. Have fun!

Mid-2011 iMac, quad i7 with SSD.

Swtor installs just fine using this version of crossover, however when I hit play and try to go into the game, it full-screens, shows a loading screen and then makes a brief sound (half a second long or so) then just sits at a black screen. I left it for a while, activity monitor still had wine using 100% CPU.

Tried this several times with no luck.

Also, should I install on a XP or Vista bottle? Or does it matter?

I got it to run in this build.

Granted I had it going in a Windows VM, but YMMV. I copied over my install from that.

I had to enable the virtual desktop, 1360x768 resolution, and then SWTOR ran fullscreen. on that.

For me when i start it i see the movie for about 2 seconds then locks up. I tried deleting the movies. but then it just locks up in the loading screen.
Any ideas?

Is it locking up with the loading screen or taking a long time to load?

In-house, we have seen it freeze in various places (most notably between character selection and server entrance between 25-35% where it seems to do nothing) only to pick up ten minutes later and go back to loading. It is very difficult to tell if the game is frozen or doing something at this point (and letting a system sit a 100% CPU is rough).

We've installed in both Vista & XP bottles and had success.

Once you've seen even the start of the movie a setting is put into one of the game ini files that says you've watched the movie, so deleting the movie likely will not help at this point. Again, I wonder if it just seems like it is locked up and actually is not. We've actually got a Windows machine that sees the same trouble here... it takes a long, long time to get in the game. I cannot stress that enough.

If it is actually locking up, we'd love to have a log file.

What graphics card do you have on board? Do you know how to collect a log file with SWTOR launched?

If not, we have a Support Library Article that will walk you through it. Useful flags in this case should be +d3d,+d3d9,+wined3d,+module,+seh,+tid (note the absence of spaces, you should be able to copy & paste those flags to the "other" field as is). Unfortunately, the log file will be too large to attach here and will just spam the forum a bit. You'd be best off sending it in as a ticket (or to info@codeweavers.com) and then referencing this thread AND asking for me. I'll take a look and see if I see anything obvious and if not, I'll pass it off to our developers. To have our developers take a look it is very important that I know your graphics card and the exact version of the MacOS that you are running.

Many thanks in advance should you opt to send in a log file!

Locking up. I left it running last night before i went to bed and when i got up it was still loading. before character selection. just the plain loading screen where it plays the movies(when they are in the directory)

Ah, we encountered a similar issue on a similar machine... turns out your video card is not being properly detected. But, there is a workaround!

You will need to set a registry key for the bottle SWTOR is in.
If anyone else is reading this, please note that these instructions are specific to Orlando's system and if you chose to make this adjustment you will need to know the correct number for your graphics card.

Under:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER//Software//Wine

Create the Key:
Direct3D

Create the new string:
VideoMemorySize

And set the value to:
1024

That did the trick!
seems to work fine too. can run around the fleet and quest in belsavis with no problems. I did turn off shadows since that did make it a bit choppy.
But now I can delete bootcamp =)

Thank You!

Just tried that patch and I'm quite impressed about the progress made! Graphics were better than I tought, it took some time to load but nothing unbearable. I got the videos (which I skipped with esc key) and at the character selection program background was dark, I changed some of my graphics settings to lower and it solved that problem. I was able to move around easily and the experience was fluid, more than I tought for a first working patch.

I'm a Ubuntu 11.10 user with i7 2600k and HD 7950 2Gb graphic card.

Some glitches I experimented:

  • when playing in full screen mode a bug seems to be happening with the Unity bar on the left staying there blacked out and the whole playing screen seems to be an inch moved to the right to accomodate the space taken by the bar (leaving the last right inch invisible)

  • My keyboard (logitech classic keyboard 200) was not working at all

  • I was unable to switch back to my desktop, or any other program while I was playing (even by reducing playing screen size and clicking on my firefox windows or a skype conversation for example)

  • When I quit the game my unity bar stay blacked, and the whole screen is freezed. I had to restart.

I too have a black screen, but only after selecting my character. It takes a long time, maybe 10 minutes or so just to load the in game GUI, but that's all I get. I will see the radar's tracker spin a little, then it just stops. Music keeps on playing fine though. I tried the work around suggested above, entering 256, as I have an older iMac, but there's no change. Running the unsupported build with OS X 10.7.3. My machine is as follows:

Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB

Edit:

Looking at the cxlog, I see this error being spammed:

fixme:d3d_texture:texture_init Failed to create surface 0x35c4fc68, hr 0x8876017c
err:d3d:resource_init Out of adapter memory

So, apparently I'm out of memory. Will it be possible for me to run this in Crossover? I'm able to play the game fairly well in Bootcamp on the same Mac.

I tried again and was able to get my keyboard working as well as quitting the game correctly. On my side everything is really just great except the black unity bar.

I almost have this working on my fedora 16.

I can login to the game but when I do all I see is the UI but all the other textures are black. You can see an examplehere

System Infromation:

I7 2600k
4 gigs of Ram
EVGA 1TB 560ti
ASUS P8P67

I install DX9 and vcrun2008 that got me the UI elements. I also created a Virtual Wine Desktop to correct screen res issues.

In Preferences, change "Shader Complexity" to low.

Thank you Alan I been racking my brain on that simple fix for hours.

So Far I am good to go I loaded into the fleet without a problem and I am running around.

Running Fedora Core 16

Were able to run on my MacBook Pro with NVIDIA GT9600, but the artifacts were insane. Is there a "lower" limit we get out of the game. Seeing people above are able to run the game OK.

Anyhows, thanks for taking the time to making the game run :)

It downloaded and installed fine but when I log in I get past the title screen and the screen goes black with some strange boxes, an example can be seen here: http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s318/schematicsninja/Picture2-3.png

EDIT: I'm an idiot, didnt have diretX installed!

Ugh, Im not good at this but I REALLY wanna play SWToR, my next issue is the graphics are all messed up, I have all the settings at their lowest but everything is messed up, here is a screen shot of what I mean by messed up. All my system specs are in the previous post.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s318/schematicsninja/Picture5-2.png

The game works fine for me, considering my Mac is old as hell.
But I cannot load existing characters, I can only play with new ones.

Any idea why?

This is EXACTLY what I'm getting. The gfx seem ok, except for everything that moves (characters, droids, etc). I opened a case for it, but I'm happy I am not the only one having this issue :)

Caron, if you are also reading this: I opened a ticket (880157) and this picture shows exactly what I am seeing.

So far, I have gotten no reply to the ticket and collecting debugging info gives me a 238MB file, so didn't send that yet either.

I have this same issue on my MacBook Pro (2.5 GHz C2D, GeForce 8600m GT 512MB, 10.7.3), while I don't have it on my iMac with lesser specs. I haven't pin pointed why I have the issue. When I first used this MBP, I did not initially have the problem, so I am unsure if an update to the game caused it. Need to look into it further.

Under:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER//Software//Wine

Create the Key:
Direct3D

Create the new string:
VideoMemorySize

And set the value to:
1024

I am running SWTOR on a second generation MacBook Air with the integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000. I had to do the above trick or else the screen would be completely black but it only got me a working UI in the game, the main screen where the characters and environment are displayed would still be black.

Note that all UI elements were fine and functional. I changed a lot of the graphics settings in the in game preferences but that would amount to nothing.

Then I found a post here which basically says to also insert a key HKEY_CURRENT_USER//Software//Wine//Direct3D//useGLSL and set the value to enabled.

This immediately solved the issue for me.

I had some trouble getting this to run..

Using the crosstie.. it would freeze after installing DirectX and then downloading the Launcher.. it would never get to proceed..

I could then restart and run Launcher and get it to install...

I did have to Regedit and modify the wine/Direct3d adding the openGLSL enabled that is mentioned above.

it would then start in an odd resolution..

I reset it to windowed mode and I am now running!

On to testing!

Should I upload my logfile?

Sketchie

Hi,

everything works fine for me with the unsupported build. Had a freeze after the first loading screen but after manually editing the registry according to my system as suggested above I´m using the force for hours now with, strangely enough, no problems, glitches, etc 😉

My system is:

iMac 21" (mid2011) 12,1
Radeon 6770M with 512mb video memory
12GB RAM

Thank you very much, may the juice be with you

Have you tried setting your Video Memory Size in CrossOver? This seems to help on quite a few systems. I have now created a Tip on how to do this for both Mac & Linux systems.

This particular issue also plagues Windows users. There is not really anything we can do about it. If it is still occurring for you, I would suggest contacting the Bioware Support Team. In most cases, this issue is resolved with a quick fix patch and if you are still seeing so are others.

I'm not saying I've solved everyone's issues in this thread, but I am saying that I think I've responded to most that have posted with issues as of today.

I pulled as much of the useful tips and tricks from this thread and added them to the "Tips & Tricks" section. If Star Wars: The Old Republic is still not working for you it would be much more helpful if you would start (or a add to) a more specific thread regarding your issue. Before you do so, be sure to work through the tips.

Many thanks to everyone for your help thus far and for trying it out!

Running it on:

Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac12,1
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz

Chipset Model: AMD Radeon HD 6770M
VRAM (Total): 512 MB

I have tried to set the VideoMemorySize to 512 and i have also tried to run it in virtual desktop mode but i can't get pass the mainscreen loading with the blue icon in the right corner. The blue icon keep spinning and nothing happens. Any ideas what to do next?

Got it to run when i used the unsupported CrossOver for SwTor. Everything seems to work but even with everything thing set to low, it freezes for secs all the time. its playable to quest but i guess dungeons and pvp is out the question.

Works for me!
Had to turn on the virtual desktop, which is the case for most games anyway, at least for me.
Also set the Shader Complexity to low as mentioned earlier.

Only thing is the size of the game screen does not cover the entire virtual screen.

I remember having that issue in the past, don't recall how I fixed it. Shame on me...

Apart from that, the game is very smooth. Maybe having an i7 6 cores and a good NVidia help...

Ok, the screen is fixed.
I just had to ask SWTOR to use a lower resolution, let it show me, and tell it I did not want to keep it and please revert to 1680x1050. Then, magically, the screen showed full-screen.

Hey guys,

Apologies for resurrecting what I suppose to be an old thread. But I'm having a problem with SWTOR on LinuxMint 14 Nadia x64 on an AMD 4530 card (512 meg video ram). I start up the launcher and immediately am met with it being blacked out (nothing visible, just a black rectangle). This is prior to being able to download and install the game itself. I've tried the direct3D registry entries mentioned earlier (both the useGLSL and the VideoMemorySize) to no avail.

I am using the 11.3.0 unsupported version of Crossover. Any help would be very much appreciated. :)

Thanks much,
Brian

Id recommend latest crossover, what im using.

3 things one is this executable you need to run (there was/is a patch that does the same thing somewhere for that specific issue but the executable works for me, also you would need to patch wine yourself and that means no crossover, anyway) http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2097068.
Second thing is in the crossover panel, control panel, wine configuration and then Graphics , emulate a virtual desktop, 1000x615.
That will make the login screen work, it can be a slight issue later if you want to run in windowed mode, but for fullscreen it works fine. By this time you should be able to login and select characters etc. If the graphics are almost entirely black go and turn down one of the shader settings i forget wich one, and it should be all good.

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=27088

Thanks, so far the only thing I haven't done is the executable bit. I'll give that a shot and see what happens ;)

Anyhoo, wish me 'luck' and I'll get back to you guys and let you know how it goes :)

Thanks again Claes, I appreciate the input :)
