This game is still in development. please read.

As this game is still in development, there will be no rank on this game for a while.
However i was hoping for everyone interested in this game to upload the beta to a server so we can download it, if you are one of the many few.

Yes we know we wont be able to connect to the game without a beta account.
However it would be good to get this game running while its still in beta, so we have less problems when it comes to the real thing.

As far as i can tell this game is going to be a big hit off the bat, with allot of wow players and starwars fans waiting to make the switch, anticipation is the killer of games....

So lets use the beta to see what we can do.

The website for this game is http://www.swtor.com

Hi there,

Ummm...this is very thoughtful of you, a good idea and all that, but the sad
reality of it is that most all 'closed beta' releases of software like this,
require the beta testers to agree to a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) which
prohibits them (legally) from doing what you ask, telling you anything about
the game itself or sometimes even sending you a screenshot isn't allowed either...

The proverbial 'stuck between a rock and a tight spot' ... you might be asking
people to do something illegal here ... get what I mean? 8) You very well may
have to hope for an 'open' beta to appear before you can lay your hands on it,
or you might try begging and pleading by email with much ferocity directly with
the game's devs about what you want to do..."it never hurts to ask" as they say...

Cheers!

There is always a possibility that this is true, and i don't wish to ask anyone to do anything illegal.
Even if it is a closed beta i'm sure there will be a torrent out there somewhere,
and there will be people setting up private servers all over the world.

So it should be easy enough to get it, i was just thinking in advance.
As for asking directly, i don't have the business knowhow to ask them something like that, "err hi i was just wondering, can i have a closed beta key so i can test this game on linux".

As far as i can tell they dont even have an alpha yet, let alone a beta. the game is supposed to be coming out ether dec this year or jan next.

So we got some time ether way.

also sorry for the double post but i feel that this is not realy applicable to create a new thread for but here goes.

i think because this is a mmorpg the game will definatly have some sort of anti-cheat software.

if they go for there own brand like warden from blizzard [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warden_(software)][/link] there is a 50/50 chance that it wont work at first at least.

or on the other hand if they employ another like gameguard which aion so famously dumped [link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NProtect_GameGuard][/link] there is no chance that it will work without considerable hacks.

there have been hacks to disable it so that aion players on linux could play. however it was scraped before many people started playing aion.

so straight out of the box this game could be a complete flop for linux users, or it could be perfect. ether way im sure that we will need to use any tips and tricks that we had to use on other bioware games like bioshock.

but i have noticed that no matter how you look at it wine needs work a d3d11 wrapper fast because most games are heading in that direction, world of warcraft already has the options to use it.

Unless they make a very nice opengl version then everything is said was a moot point.

You never know, Bioware might even release a Mac version..

I'll be looking for penguins in hell, first, I believe though.

It's extremely unlikely that BioWare is releasing this without an NDA, right now. Also unlikely is the prospect of a Mac version.

Substantially more possible - If Codeweavers reaches out to BioWare for a copy of the client, and signs the necessary NDA's themselves, the devs are quite likely to agree to provide it. Even Legal can't complain when the upside is opening the game to more players with no effort on their part.

I've pre-ordered the Standard Edition from Amazon and am hoping that TOR works in Wine by the time it gets to my doorstep late December. Looking around WineHQ it doesn't look too good, but I've got high hopes :)
