I have installed this under Linux Mint 9 and Crossover Games 9.0.0. and it simply will not work. I get the opening splash screens and then a dark window that won't go away. Can anyone shed some light on what I can do to fix this?

Also, sometimes (Or at least in Mac), the game minimizes after a movie so you'll need to switch back. If it isnt the case you can try two things.
Check Tips & Tricks section, for more info about it, how disable cinematics or run the game in window mode.
try this. when you get the dark window, keep trying to bring into focus so that the game goes fullscreen again. to do that, find a "show desktop" appet and place it on your panel. when you get the black screen, hit the desktop applet, then maximize the window again. if you can make it through the splash screens, tell me what the main game menu looks like. even better, take a screen shot. or try running it in windowed mode to take the screen shot.
