Preliminary Testing of SFC: Orion Pirates

Hi All,

I've done some preliminary testing to see if I can get SFC: Orion Pirates to run. Unfortunately, this first attempt has been unsuccessful. The game boots up and as soon as you start entering the CD code key, it locks up.

Here is my setup:

Mac Mini (2.5 GHz Intel Core i5)
Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion)
4GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6630M (256 MB VRAM)

CrossOver Games (Mac) 10.1.2
Windows 98 Bottle
Starfleet Command: Orion Pirates (without patch)

I'm going to try and tinker around a bit more.

Hi there,

I've tried installing and running OP on CrossOver Games 8.0 under Ubuntu Lucid. The game does install and load, however the screen 'bounces', seemingly as it's trying to draw the top panel of the desktop on the screen at all times.

Spec:
AMD Phenom II 955BE X4
4GB RAM
Asus M4A79T mobo
ATi 5770 graphics (probably the reason for most of the problems I have! ATi drivers are not known for being brilliant in Linux)
Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04

The game doesn't run at all under plain Wine in my experience, and trying to run it inside a WinXP virtual machine in VirtualBox results in slideshow performance and white 'blobs' all over the starfield once you've loaded up the skirmish/battle scenario.

I'm going to keep tweaking and see if I can get it to maybe run in windowed mode, but I think I tried that many moons ago and all that it did was run veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery slowly.

Cheers,
James Smith

Hi all,

I have good news!

SFC: Orion Pirates works with CrossOver Mac 11.2, along with Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). Unfortunately, there is graphic instability (using 1040 x 760 resolution) in the game. However if you use the virtual desktop option (800 x 600 resolution), the game plays very well.

Here is my setup:

Mac Mini (2.5 GHz Intel Core i5)
Mac OS X 10.8
4GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6630M (256 MB VRAM)

CrossOver Mac 11.2
Windows XP Bottle
SFC: Orion Pirates (v. 2.5.5.2)
