Native Spotify for Linux

While Spotify works great with Crossover, please be aware that there is also a native "preview" version available from the webpages and support this if you can. It's not supported yet but perhaps if enough people use it, Spotify will release it as an official client.

However, some caveats apply:

 • It is packaged for Debian and derative systems so users of other systems might have to do some additional work to get it installed.
 • Because of an unreliable ad-system, it is not available for the free versions of Spotify, Unlimited or Premium only.
 • No support for local files.
 • It contains a few bugs, for instance the volume control does not work. Most of these can be worked around so it's no big issue.

Instructions on how to set it up can be found at the previews page.

Oh the free version doesn't work with the linux client, no wonder I couldn't make it work.
Thankfully the CX one works great.

The native preview version for Linux great, premium or free.

No point for wine for now on

Still says does not work with Free and I quote

"As we haven't found a reliable way to display ads yet, this version is only available to Spotify Premium and Unlimited subscribers."

Nothing has changed as far as I can see.

I tried it and yes it does seem to be working. Maybe they just have not updated their web pages.

I have it right here open, it's free and it shows ads all the time

See this screenshot image

Can you post a link?
I tried the native one last year and it was premium only, maybe that changed.

I download it from their page spotify.com

I don't know X_slinter, I looked at their download Spotify Download for Linux page and it says:

Spotify for Linux

This is a preview build of Spotify for Linux. As a preview release
this version is still unsupported, but we're running it ourselves
and will try to make sure it keeps pace with its Mac and Windows
siblings, there are issues regarding decoding of local music on the
Linux platform so we haven't included support for local files in
this version. As we haven't found a reliable way to display ads yet,
this version is only available to Spotify Premium and Unlimited
subscribers.

Is their website outdate??

EDIT: please add what country are you accessing Spotify form, I'm in USA and it's different country through country.
