Game stutters on the turn end and escape menu

Mac M1, GOG version of the game.

The game stutters for a moment on each turn (with FPS dropping from ~300 to ~30), the same happens after pressing the Esc button. It's technically playable but the waiting time is really annoying especially when you need to wait for several turns. Autosave if turned off.
