Smashball is a HalfLife-2 mod that is available free via Steam, and it can be
downloaded/installed using the Steam GUI interface. As such, it relies on a
pre-existing HalfLife-2 title being present in your Steam installation (bottle),
and thus will not work unless one of the following qualifying titles are already
installed....see;
http://store.steampowered.com/search/?category2=16
Smashball did not display any issues when installed via the Steam interface, but
it does need Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 runtime installed into the same bottle.
Trying to start the game itself, may generate an error message which reads;
'CAudioSourceMemWave (xxx): GetDataPointer()' -- if you encounter this problem,
see the tips&tricks page here for a possible work-around.
My qualifying product is Half-Life 2/The Orange Box
The installation procedure I used was this simple ;
- Install the Steam client via the cxinstallwizard builtin target (if not already installed)
- Make sure you have one of the qualifying games present in your Steam installation
- Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable into the same bottle
- Start the Steam client, login and download/install the Smashball software
- Launch the game
I give this a bronze for now due to known problems with the mod crashing/misbehaving.
The authors of Smashball are going to release patches that hopefully resolve the
issues this mod has, but until then, bronze it is -- I'll retest it later once said
patches become available.
Cheers!
