GOG.com version - works in 11.2...

Tested on a MacBook Pro (128 MB RMX1600, CX11.2, OS X 10.7.4), MacBook Air (256 MB GF320M, CX11.2, OS X 10.7.4), and on a MacBook (GMA 950, CX11.2, OS X 10.6.8) - the game works perfectly with no stability issues, provided that (a) all movies are turned off (including the movies for Secret Projects), and (b) ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1 is present in the game's .ini file.

Setting DirectDraw=0 also within the game's .ini file allows for play in widescreen, but the menu bar remains visible, and the game itself may experience instability.

Use of the unofficial patch at the Civilization Gaming Network (http://www.civgaming.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7511) is highly recommended.

This game works flawlessly on Linux in CX11 in an XP bottle. YMMV with Macs, but don't assume you have to do anything more than below. Try fresh install in XP bottle exactly as below. Good Luck and post your results!!

Same here.

SMAC (GOG version)
Ubuntu 12.04
Crossover 11.2.0

Installed in its a XP bottle, it worked great. Only one issue (see below) existed and it didn't affect gameplay. Left this game running for days with no problems.

Only thing that I changed was to disable music. The rest of the sounds work perfectly, just the music in SMAC is very special (long story, but it is very unique in that the background music is patched together on the fly for seamless and less repetitive game music).

Ah yes, I forgot about that. From what I gathered on the WINE AppDB, SMAC dynamically generates its music from .wav files and something with it doesn't work well in WINE, leading to stuttering. Disabling music resolves it.

Also, yes, I used a WinXP bottle; the game worked in a Win98 bottle, as recommended by others, but was curiously less stable than it was when running in XP.

Apart from the game, the game is quite stable and playable, even when using the fan patched-exe's offered with bug and balance fixes. I played the whole game through to completion over a week (Spartan Federation, with the Path to Transcendance ending) with no major problems (apart from one random crash).
