Notes on Sacred via Steam COG Mac 8.0.0 Updated 8/28/09

First, I should mention I do own the CD distribution of Sacred, but that is NOT the version I have tried. I went ahead and paid the $9.99 and bought the steam version as a download (included all expansions, Sacred Gold). I have not played the game all they way through, only a little bit of the vampiress story line.

Install Notes:

You NEED to do the DirectX redistributeable install into the bottle you have (or will have) Sacred. If you do not, it will attempt to do the install itself. This is fine and dandy if you are in windowed mode, but if you are in full screen - at least on one of my systems, it never came out of the full screen to show the DirectX install window. When I ran in windowed mode and saw the issue, I was able to exit and install DX.

Thoughts so far:

The good:

The game installs
The game runs
Audio works
Framerate appears decent/smooth on my Mac Pro w/ 8800GT video
Appears to work in both windowed and full screen mode

The bad:

UPDATED 5/12/09
Note on the graphic artifacts - they didn't appear on my laptop with a intel gma video chipset in it, so it may be limited to my nvidia card. I know my card works ok as I run COD4 native on my mac, and various games in windows so it may be an issue with the Apple driver for the nvidia 8800gt.

There are graphic artifacts that are visible as distinct horizontal lines running across the screen. These lines DO NOT always run fully across the screen. Sometimes they just run across a certain section (like rendering of bushes, or a pedestal). The good thing is although sometimes they can be distracting it doesn't make the game unplayable.

The untested:

in game videos/cutscenes

General Conclusion:

Overall the game is quite playable even with its faults in the graphics. I hope to have some screenshots soon - my default desktop is kinda big and I hate resizing it, but I'll get something soon.

Update 8/28/2009

Graphics glitches are gone. I'm not sure what created them to begin with, but after other problems with the bottle became apparent, I deleted the bottle and started over. I'm not sure if the glitches were fixed in Crossover Games 8, or if something was wrong with the bottle earlier but I no longer appear to be having graphical problems with the game.

Hi,

is network working for you? Since Crossover Games 8 / Snow Leopard when I click on any of the network modes the game crashes with a wine error popup. Singleplayer seems to work.

honestly I hadn't tried since 10.6, I've been running into some other problems that have taken a bit of my attention away, I'll give it a try either later this afternoon or tomorrow; my guess is if you're seeing it, I'll probably see it too...

Ok, I went and tested it today, I launched Sacred Gold from Steam then attempted:

Local network
Closed Internet
Open Internet

all forms worked fine for me - I was able to find a game and join it and saw my toon appear within the game and moved around a bit (and saw a few other player toons in there)

So I'd have to say the networking aspect is working for me.

Have you checked your firewall settings on your mac? Maybe you're blocking something that needs to be open...

Thanks for your help so I knew that it wasn't a bug of COG

The problems suddenly disappeared after another reboot.
Perhaps there was a problem with the network as I read somewhere that this happens if the game can't resolve the ip.
