How to install?

Hi Guys, I just downloaded Crossover and would like to install Rome Total War Gold Edition. How do I do it?

bump

Hi...

...that depends -- which release of the game do you have? ..ie;
digital download, CD/DVD, Steam...?...

Cheers!

Thanks for replying!

I have the Gold DVD Edition.

Hi again...

...you've not told us which OS you are using, so I have to

double guess a bit...but...to install software with crossover,
is explained in the online docs.... see;

http://www.codeweavers.com/support/docs/crossover-games-linux/

...or if Mac...

http://www.codeweavers.com/support/docs/crossover-games-mac/

...if, after installing, the game will not start, then other
configuration may be necessary --- if you are using MacOS, then
you should know the DVD has disc based DRM which may not work
on the Mac, and if so, we cannot help you here with that...;

...there is some additional data for this title on winehq...see;

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=3083

Cheers!

My apologies, I'm using Ubuntu 11.10

I'm a bit lost reading the documentation. Is Crossover Games gui based or command prompt based?

If gui how/where do I start the gui? I can see 6 icons when I type Crossover into unity 5 of which are the bommerang symbol of Crossover but they have no title under the icon. The final icon is the uninstall.

That is pretty much where I'm at. My objective is to assess how easy (intuitive usability) it is to use Crossover to install and play DX9 era games.

Thanks

...okay... I would first ask, if you would be so kind, that
you tell me -why- the documentation is confusing? It's just
that I'm curious and always looking to clarify docs where it's
possible to do so ; obviously I need feedback to get anywhere
with that... =)

...now for your questions ... Crossover Games is primarily GUI
based, but like all 'good' software, you can access most of the
command functionality via commandline as well...

... as far as Unity goes, well... that window management 'kiosk'
implementation came out -after- the current crossover GUI stuffs
were written, and so crossover doesn't work 'as expected' with
Unity ...yet (as you've noticed). I'm reasonably sure the next
release of crossover will have better support for Unity, but right
now if you want 'ease of use', use another window manager. I don't
use Unity (nor am ever likely to), and so cannot advise you there,
but I know others have gotten it to work by basically getting to
know Unity better... perhaps another advocate (who uses Unity) may
chime in here, but even they will probably suggest that new crossover
users stick with gnome or whatever - you'll have an easier time of
it at present ... elsewise start reading the Unity docs/forums... ;)

...with that in mind, you probably won't be able to properly assess
Crossover Games in Unity ... there's a big advocates thread on Unity,
and what CupCake Ninja said (in part) was...;

"At CodeWeavers HQ we are working on a design that will be more polished for Unity (and Gnome 3 and hopefully any other unforeseen future design changes in the Linux look and feel); but design changes do take time, so a solution (while in the works) is not right around the corner. We need time to make sure that any solution we implement will not make life difficult for distributions that have not changed their look and feel.

Not our bug...

Applications that are newly installed do not automagically populate into the list. If someone does not know this, they may not be able to figure out that their application of choice was successfully installed. It is maddening to scroll through the list knowing that you just installed Gimp and not being able to find it.

I work around this by performing a search on the list. The top of the "applications conglomeration" has a search function (hooray!). When it is used, it updates the list and any newly installed application can be easily found

There are other bugs...

It's very easy to get 'stuck' with an application in a 'full screen' state. The standard ways to shut down the application apply... but are not for the faint of heart (as in, not a great solution for the 'average' user). And with unrelated graphic driver problems, this is a pain.

Installing things like another desktop sometimes collides with Unity and means that more measures must be taken to restore (or destroy) working order (also not a great solution for the 'average' user).

Ultimately, I think Unity will in theory be a win for Ubuntu. It will mean having one system for managing the desktop (instead of a spin for netbooks, a spin for tablets and a spin for desktop users). I believe this is why it was called "Unity" in the first place... so that one could have Ubuntu on a Tablet, Netbook & Desktop computer and have it look identical for all three. Thus, "unifying" the user experience.

Right now Unity has some growing pains. I have high hopes that the LTS release coming in April of 2012 will bring stability and manageability to this new form. If it doesn't, I think we will begin to see severe drops in the number of users choosing Ubuntu. "

...that paints the picture for mine ; you're not going to be able to
assess anything properly, when Unity itself is so bugged, end of story...

..likewise, it's near impossible for me to advise you further, so I would
suggest you install another window manager of your choosing. Perhaps then,
the documentation will start to make sense as well?.....

Cheers!
