Each time I save the game, the screen freezes. The game is still running in the background and I can click things, but the screen stays stuck.
Anyone have any ideas other than new bottles or switching between 98 and xp?
Thanks for the help!

This is what I discovered as well, but haven't found a fix yet.
I'm having the same problem; when saving the game, loading a game or changing the name of a ride, the screen freezes as soon as 'ok' or 'cancel' is clicked on the dialogue box. The game continues in the background but the screen itself stops redrawing.
This means the following:
-Games can be saved, but you have to quit and restart after saving
-Games cannot be loaded (well, they CAN, but you can't play after loading!)
-Rides can be renamed, but a restart is necessary afterwards, and you have to save the game (see above two problems)
I'm pretty sure this is caused by the use of what appears to be Windows system dialogue boxes to browse for files (for saving and loading) and for the input for the ride names. These are presumably causing problems in Crossover. The main problem here is the lack of ability to load games, which might be able to bypass by opening the save file from a file explorer rather than from RCT2.exe. I haven't been able to try this yet but I'm working on it.
Hi,
Just curious...which release of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 do you refer to
here? The original or a subsequently released digital download version?
Cheers!
I'm running v2.01.028, which I think is the retail version.
After a bit more tinkering: the problem described above disappears if you enable virtual desktop in the winecfg. This lets you save and load games and rename rides without crashes. I get really bad performance in virtual desktop however, making the game unplayable, whereas it runs fantastically well fullscreen, albeit with lack of save/load functionality.

Hi again,
Ok...that behavior actually tallies with what I've observed
with the original CD release -- I'm not sure if the same approach
works for the digital download version(s) available...
...which is my way of pointing out you didn't exactly answer my question 8)
Then again, perhaps I didn't ask quite the right question...did you buy the
CD version, or digital download version instead? (versioning numbers don't
give you that answer 8)
Cheers!
A friend game me the iso, he says it's retail. Got any idea how to fix this?
Hi,
Okay...here's the deal...I have the original CD release plus addon
CD packs -- these do not work in Crossover due to the disc based DRM
used by the game's makers. See the bottom posting of the following thread;
http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=523;forum=1;msg=75098
Therefore, I have to assume you're living in a country where such DRM/DMCA
laws don't apply, as the only way to run the disc based version is to somehow
circumvent the DRM used (Securom). There is an official patch available, but
it doesn't remove the DRM mechanism, it just alters it so it works on WinXP iirc;
http://download.cnet.com/RollerCoaster-Tycoon-2-2-8-patch/3000-18541_4-10236743.html
...or...
ftp://ftp.atari.com/patches/rctycoon2/
It's because of this disc based DRM issue, that I've largely dropped my support
for the disc based release. Previously however, (before my country joined the
DMCA bandwagon), I was legally allowed to use unofficial patches to play the
game....I know from that experience, that no two patches worked equally, and
that they introduced game glitches that probably aren't there in a pristine
situation...ie; one patch would work but not allow expansion packs to work,
another patch allowed the expansion packs to work, but then the menu/save game
functions were all screwed up....the patches themselves were introducing new
glitches and problems - this is exactly what good DRM causes to happen, and
only the original game developer knows the correct way to circumvent it.
That said....(and that's all I can say on the above issue)...there continues
to be a lot of interest in this game title itself, so I might start more
actively supporting it...however-so-ever...that's mainly because there is now
a digital download version available, and as such won't be affected by the
disc based DRM issue and so that's the version I'll be covering -- disc based
releases are just too much trouble (when they use DRM), especially so for the
Mac user due to OSX's scsi driver design...and the CD media itself is becoming
more and more deprecated as a data storage medium (just like the floppy disc)
as time marches forward, they'll probably end up being valuable antiques one day 8)
Cheers!
Edit: ahh....it will probably be the Direct2Drive release I'll get, as I know
the online Securom DRM they use actually works (and if it doesn't, you can email
them for a manual unlock key which seems to work otherwise)...
