Rift without using 'low rendering' video option

Hey,
Like most of you I installed crossover and Rift, hoping to make the most of it's great graphics. However as many threads suggest here, It doesn't work unless the low quality rendering box is ticked on the video options. I was wondering if anyone has come up with a solution to this, and if it is possible to play Rift with the low rendering option turned off. Many thanks

First off, are you mac or linux?

If you are on linux, you can try some of the registry tweaks listed here: Better graphics on Rift

If you're on Mac, I can't vouch for the effectivness of the registry tweaks, but its worth a shot.
( you may also want to keep an eye on this thread.)

Jack, there is a solution. it's in the other thread I started.

you have to go into your rift folder. open up the regedit.exe and create a direct3D KEY with some values to it. In the other thread there is a link to how someone did via wine. just follow those instructions and you should be able to get off the low render option. I did it to mine this morning and had tears in my eyes. the visuals are just that much more amazing. it's well worth the effort.

I'm on a mac :) Thanks Scot, will give it a shot <3

Where can I find your post. I too would like to be able to play RIFT on other settings besides low video rendered. Any help is appreciated.

I believe this is the thread being referred to:

Okay, I'm curious about this one. We have a current-model MBP (ATI 6770). The game will let us turn off the legacy renderer, but then it just crashes instantly at launch.

I did try the suggestions from that Linux forum for running regedit and setting up D3D keys, but that doesn't seem to affect it.

The crash appears to occur basically right as the renderer would be coming online and showing character select.

Obviously, this machine's hardware is plenty capable of running the real renderer; I'd really love a way to do this without dealing with boot camp and dual-booting. (If that's what it comes down to, we'll live with the legacy renderer.)

Perhaps the LegacyRenderer option isn't being properly saved by the game? After shutting RIFT down, go into the bottle via

Configure>Manage Bottles>Advanced>Open Drive C: in Finder

and browse to

drive_c/users/crossover/Application Data/RIFT/rift.cfg

Is "LegacyRenderer" set to "True"? If not, change it to "True", save the file, and then try again.

Wait, I'm an idiot - you're talking about deliberately turning off the LegacyRenderer in order to try hacking the reg and enable high-quality graphics as per

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=8390;forum=1;msg=108171

?

If so, you might be fighting an uphill battle with your driver...

I don't know about saving/not-saving. It works if I change it.

The question is: Is there any way to fix this so I don't HAVE to use the low-quality renderer to avoid crashing? This machine is plenty powerful. So if there were anything that could be done ("turn off antialiasing" or "set spell effects to..." or "create the following registry keys") that would allow the game to run the regular renderer without crashing, that would be stupendously cool.

I have it working in legacy mode just fine; it's just that legacy mode doesn't look nearly as cool, and I don't know what causes these crashes.

Nah, I'm just asking a silly question rather than a sane one.

I might well! But yes, that's the kind of thing I'd like to try to do. So far it appears that I can't get it to work, and for now I'm just gonna set it to legacy and somehow bear up with my suffering. (Maybe I'll set up a twitter account so I can post it to #firstworldproblems.)

firstworldproblems, indeed. ;)

To date I'm afraid we haven't figured out a reliable way to get the high-quality renderer working on affected cards (which are primarily ATI). The workaround referenced, above, is apparently helpful for some users but we don't really test it. For the time being our official stance is "we need better openGL support in the drivers, and until then run in Legacy mode". Not super uplifting, I know...
