I'm running Fedora Core on my IBM T400. I've got an ATI 3400 Mobility in this for 3d support and I have the ati drivers installed and functioning. I'm able to login and patch and even watch the intro movie. After that I get a black rectangle in the middle of the screen and then the screen goes completely white with the rift mouse cursor. I can minimize/maximize the window, but that's about all I can do. I get no errors, just a lovely white screen that's completely useless to me :(

I have that same screen! If I press "return" it sounds like I am doing something. I am hoping to actually get to play a bit before the 30 days included with purchase are up.

SAME WITH ME!!! it would be nice if they could fix it so i could play!

Same issue here. Tried in WINE (1.3.33) and got the problem, so thought the paid version might work out better. Same problem here.

A little information:

Ubuntu 11.10
Alienware M11x R3
I'm using bumblebee and launching the game with the optirun command - proprietary nvidia drivers
Graphics card is Nvidia GT540m.

With WINE the opening movie didn't play and instead went straight to the white screen (unsure why), but with xover I was able to enjoy the opening movie in perfect clarity, but then it dumped to the white screen again. I can hear the character selection music in the background - just can't actually do anything.

At first I thought it must have something to do with my card\drivers\etc, but reading the OP's symptoms with a ATI card I'm wondering if it's something else that's common in our configurations.

Have you tried setting "LegacyRenderer" to "True" in the "rift.cfg" file?
