I just patched to 1.4 and once I get to the loading screen with the large RIFT logo, the program crashes. I've started and restarted and am fine through the patcher, but within seconds of that loading screen popping, it crashes.

I was able to log in earlier today (using an unmodified build of CXGames 10.1.1 on Lion) but there have been server issues all day. Some NA servers are still being updated with fixes.
Where did you get this modified version?
unmodified.
ROFL, read fail. My bad.
I'm on Snow Leopard. I wonder if that's the issue. I literally was playing just before the servers went down for the 1.4 patch, and logged in after to consistent crashes at the logo loading screen.
I started having the same problem today. It didn't start until I tried bumping up the graphics up a little. Before that it was running fine.
This looks like a client bug. In the 1.4 Hotfix #2 it's being addressed (happening right now on NA servers)
Fixed a startup crash when running on Wine/CrossOver with low video
memory. If you still experience crashes when entering the world, try
enabling the low quality renderer and/or playing at a lower
resolution as a workaround.
Didn't help me any. I'm still crashing at the Rift logo. Is there any way to force the game to load in the low quality renderer (lqr)? The first place I'm aware of is on the character selection screen and I can't get that far. The game had been working fine until I turned the lqr off.
Is it not loading at all or can you get to the character select screen? On my 13" Thunderbolt MBA I could get to the character select screen but would crash when entering game (I have not been able to try since Hotfix #2 was released today). If you can get to char select you have access to all of the video options at this point. I am guessing that means there is a pref file somewhere in the Rift folder that saves your client settings per machine (or else it would attempt to run every comp you ran the game on at the same settings).
My game is crashing at the Rift logo load screen before I get to the character select screen.
hey
I down load rift 1.4 under crossover 10.1.1 it wasn't work and after I down load crossover 10.1.2 and I steel cannot pass de 10% of the charging games. I hope it's gone be fix as soon as possible as usual

In the other thread called "Tearing Under Lion" there's a solution to fix the tearing problem that also has the side affect of throwing me into LQR. You may want to try it out:
Launch Crossover Games, and head to Programs>Run Command. Select the
"RIFT" bottle from the drop-down menu, and type "regedit" in the
command field. Press "enter".Browse to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D (you might have to add
Direct3D as a new key)within "Direct3D", add "UseGLSL" as a string value. Modify the value
to "disabled".Now, close the registry editor and try playing RIFT. Any difference
in the character rendering?

I had seen that and gave it a try earlier this morning and it didn't make a difference for me. I'm still crashing at the logo loading screen.

Hotfix #2 did not fix my issue with my recent MacBook Air
All of our in-house testing indicates that version 1.4 is not inherently broken, however users who've upgraded to Lion will probably see an across the board performance decrease on account of the new and not entirely smoothed-out graphics drivers for OS X 10.7.
If RIFT is crashing at the splash screen or the loading screen for you, my primary recommendation would be to enable the LegacyRenderer, which you can do by editing the following config file (with RIFT turned off, of course):
(your home folder)/Library/Application Support/Crossover/Bottles/(bottle)/drive_c/users/crossover/Application Data/RIFT/rift.cfg
Change LegacyRenderer to "True", then restart RIFT.
Also, as simplistic as it seems, I recommend toggling between windowed and full-screen mode from the settings in RIFT's login screen. This can fix a surprising variety of login crashes and freezes.

This solution has worked for me. Now I can get to the character selection screen.

You should be able to open it in TextEdit. Right click and select "Open With". If TextEdit isn't available select "Other" and then choose it.
Changing LegacyRenderer to "True" worked for me! Thanks!
thank for your help cerebris it's working I can play again thank again
