Rift framerate problems on Linux.

Hi there,

Just been trying the feasibility of migrating to Linux again.. (it's a long term love/hate relationship), and part of that means that I need to be able to run the games I'm playing.

Anyway, I've been trying to get Rift running.. and the setup was all nice and straightforward enough, the problem is the frame rates..

On my PC, running Windows 7.. I can run Rift with custom gfx settings(ultra with tweaks) with a resolution of 1920x1200, and I can sustain 30FPS..

I try to do the same thing on the same PC, running Ubuntu 11.04 with a trial of Crossover Game, and I get a mind blowing 1 to 2 FPS...

Now I expected some kind of performance hit, but is this normal?

OK, I'm pretty much a total noob when it comes to Linux.. so any suggestions in simpleton speak please :)

Cheers..

Switching to Linux entirely is kind of a dream ;) Like it or not you're always going to hit some snag and will require Windows for various reasons. I always advise people to dual-boot, especially if they are new to linux.

Regarding the fps, could you give us more details about your machine (CPU, graphics card, amount of RAM etc) ? You might also want to submit a ticket if you bought Crossover.

As far as I know, the fps issue is known and Codeweavers are working to improve it. I do not know how long it will take though.

My PC is..

AMD Phenom II 1090T @ 3.8Ghz
4 GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 PC3-12800C8
Nvidia GTX 280

Dual booting off an OCZ Vertex LE SSD
Windows 7 Pro (x64)
Ubuntu 11.04 (64-Bit)

Haven't bought Crossover yet, still trialling it.. and likely to remain that way if this problem is indicative :(

Your framerates combined with your 64vit processor... The first think to do is make sure that you have the 32bit combatability libraries and 32bit parts of your graphix driver installed. Also, make sure you are running the proprietary nvidia driver, noveau sucks for gaming. I have a similar setup (but run multilib slackware instead), and normally pull equivalent framerates fron win7 to linux. (though i get better frames on winxp than either win7 or linux, go figure).

Like I said, I'm a simpleton when it comes to Linux (is why I keep giving up on it lol).. so what/where/how do I check this? 😊

This bit I know I'm already doing :)

Also, I'm not sure how well the "normal" graphics renderer is working in WINE yet; You'll probably get better results if you switch to the "Low Quality Graphics Renderer" in the in-game video settings. It'll need to restart RIFT before it takes effect. After it is back up and running, you can put the other settings up a bit. The Low Quality renderer doesn't look as good as the normal one, but it seems to give higher framerates when using the Ultra settings.

Hibba.
