Fix for the 1.2 launch issue is coming

A fix for this should arrive shortly; it will come in the form of a patch from Trion.

We have other fixes for general RIFT performance that we are working on; those will come more slowly, and from us.

I am hopeful that we'll be able to put in place some new testing procedures that will prevent this from happening again in the future.

Cheers,

Jeremy

w00T! Awesome News. Thanks for working so hard on this issue and for your efforts to help nudge Trion to fix it :)

sweet as! great to hear... and well done!

you guys definately deserve props! =)

Cool! I'm going through withdrawals. Thanks for the fix!!

believe it when I see it :) ... my glass is half empty

hope, that the game will run fully rendered with ati 69xx series cards then.

Jeremy, thanks. But one quick question if you dont mind.

Do you have arrangements setup with various software vendors that allow for better/more-seamless operation with Wine/Crossver?

If you are working that path, what can we (the users and wine/crossover fans) do to aid and assist in getting things working better?

Thanks again!
Andrew.

Generally, we don't. The Wine market is seen as too small by most major game companies. Most vendors are largely comfortable with what we do; a few are sometimes even mildly supportive (which is where Trion nicely seems to be headed). Sadly, most are indifferent.

I'm not sure what individual fans can do; it certainly seems like the posts on their forums were very effective. It also always helps us if our community can get involved in beta testing; I note that Rift has a public beta shard - that's the sort of thing that can be useful. It's always good to know about problems before they become a crisis. So testing and reporting regressions is also very useful.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Go there, read that.
The fix is in (tomorrow morning) and for once that is a good statement.

Sometimes a politely worded email to their official support or a forum post goes a long way. It pays to let the company know that you and I appreciate their efforts, especially in this case here where Trion acknowledged the Wine players. They cannot directly support the Wine players, but the very important fact that Hotfix#3 includes a fix for compatibility with Crossover/Wine is huge... we need to let them know how much this is appreciated... let them know that there is a measurable number of players using Wine... that Windows is not the only path a game vendor can and should follow. Posting to the forums, and using other official communication tools gives the company's Community Managers something to work with... proof of a segment of their customers that need attention.

So... post to the Rift forums, write in your blogs, update your Facebook status... whatever... get that info out there and thank them for their efforts.

Hey Guys,
very big Thanks!

Well, Rift launcher just downloaded and installed a patch, successfully, but the game still won't run. Clicking on the 'play" button sends an error report, and you're back to the all too-familiar screen sending the error report. Cancelling out of there and again trying to play just reactivates the error report loop. I sure hope that this patch from Trion was for something else, and that the Wine fix is coming in a later one.

This is weird. I just installed the trial and updated and the game runs. European shards are down atm though.

Well, that hot fix did it for me. I can now log in for the first time. :) So thanks to everyone involved for getting this done!

First let me offer my thanks to the devs both here and at Trion for their response to this issue. Sadly, I get the same behaviour here, too. After the first crash, I tried restarting Crossover just in case but still no joy.

I wonder if there is a setting change needed. Or perhaps a re-install -- although I'd hate to have to completely re-download the game again.

FWIW, my system specs:
iMac 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo
4 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 4850
Mac OS X 10.6.7
CrossOver Games 10.1.0

damn thats great.
patched rift tomorrow and the game is working again :)

still not running with hardware rendering on 6950/6970 ati card :(
software rendering looks so damn awful

sweeeet...i did a recover and a patch this morning...working great...back to multiboxin rift /flex
ty codeweavers/trion!

System Specs: 2011 MacBook Pro 17" w/AntiGlare Screen
2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 w/8mb L3 Cache
8GB 1333mhz DDR3 Ram
ATI 6750m 1GB GDDR5

Mac OS-X Snow Leopard v10.6.7 Fully Updated
CrossOver Games v10.1.0 (Currently Trial, Registering once I see the performance Rift gives.)

I am also having the crashing problem. I did a fresh install of Rift this morning just after 1am, everything installed wonderfully and am very impressed with the loading performance of CrossOver Games. My game is crashing just before the character screen loads. I have the computer set to always use the High Performance video card, instead of the onBoard one / switching feature.

I tried this game using Parallels and was like wtf... lol, so I talked to a friend and he recommended CrossOver Games. I'm very excited at the reviews of this product. It would be a dream come true to not Bootcamp into Win7 anymore and just Parallels it for any standard software needed available only on it.

Added note: I have made 0 changes to any settings within CrossOver Games.

As a followup to my earlier post: Rift is now working again!

Taking a cue from the poster above, I tried clicking "Recover" and that seemed to do the trick.

Either that or I was just trying too soon. I had the patch installed here but Trion may still have been applying the hotfix to the NA server.

But for those of you who are still getting the game crashing right after you click "Play", try clicking "Recover". Worked for me.

I am having problems getting past the character create screen. I can get to choosing my name but not past that. It keeps giving me an error, patch communication error. My screen also looks really weird, things are all over the place. I have the latest software for my mac running snow leopard. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have a screen shot as well

So I'm getting to the loading screen after you choose your character and before you enter the world. It stops at 42% Loading map resources. What should I do?

Just want to say, I downloaded the Trion patch this morning and have been playing for the past 3 hours. Want to thank everyone for all the work they did in getting Rift playable again.

It also worked in Linux (was able to log in and play one of my characters). Cool!

Got an error after closing it (the "send error reporter thing kept poppping up) and when I hit cancel, WINE came up with an error saying riftgame needed to close. It might be because I clicked the Play button a couple times too many.

At any rate, it worked! Thanks Codeweavers for keeping us informed. And thank you to Trion too, if you're out there, for making a fix.

Hibba.

Tried the Recover and still not getting in for me. It crashes pre character select for myself.

It works! I did have to uninstall and reinstall and reset my soul tree but I've been playing for a few hours with no problems. Thanks guys!

For those who are still unable to get past the login screen and are on a Mac...

There is a known bug on initial launch that may be biting you (especially if this is your first launch of Rift or if you re-installed). Prior to logging in, go into settings and choose "windowed" mode versus full screen mode. Then go back o the login scren and try to log in. If it works, you can switch it back to full screen mode on your next launch of the game.

Otherwise... write in a ticket if using 'recover' or doing the above workaround doesn't work for you. This will make it easier for us to help you.

Apologies for the inconvenience and for any typos, posting from my phone.

I can't enter a new ticket as I haven't purchased CrossOver for Mac as of yet, I'm waiting until it works for Rift before making the purchase. My system is the following, and I've done the Recover & also the Windowed Mode setting and cannot get it to load into the Character Select, just crashes after the big Rift Logo comes up, the % meter shows up and very quickly crashes after that.

Im still having troubles with the game, an error message popped up saying my graphics card is out of date, and the game proceeds to be black with only sounds and game ui remaining.

I am getting the same exact issue. I tried hitting "Recover" (said a patch wasn't needed), restarting crossover etc.
The login/launch screen works just fine, but as soon as I hit "play" the screen starts acting up.
I tried fumbling my way through character creation, but when I hit "next" it gives me the error "the request to create the character was invalid".
Besides re-installing the game, I'm sort of at a loss here... I'm running the Crossover Trial if it makes any difference.

If you are continuing to have trouble with Rift, the first thing you should do is submit a support ticket so that we can track your issue. If you are unable to submit a support ticket, please send an email to info@codeweavers.com (which will open a ticket for you). It is easier for us if you keep each ticket narrowed to one issue, so if you are getting the 'patching error' and a black screen, please file two separate tickets. It is also important to file a ticket for these issues even if you are able to work around them. If you work around the issue and never tell us about it, we cannot work on it at all.

Once you have filed a ticket, you should consider going through the 'Tips & Tricks' posted for this game:

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=8390;tips=1

The advocates for this title have done an excellent job of migrating their tips into that section so that they are centrally located. Their tips are the same things we will likely ask you to start with to fix any issues you are seeing.

Well, I sort of fixes the messed up background by changing LegacyRenderer to "true", but now it just shows a black background, and the options. Ugh.
It's still giving me the "The request to create the character was invalid" thing, and I have a hunch that it's because It doesn't appear to respond to me clicking on any of the class options.
Not sure though, I may have to mess around with more of the tips...

Hope it's soon..

My Situation was pretty positive, with some reservations. (posted on twitter as I went through, @Syzygosa)

Machine is a 2010 27" iMac, 3.3Ghz, 12Gb RAM, ATI 4850 GPU.

The initial install went fine, patching was a bit slow and the game launched ok at first.

I had some problems with setting the resolution - This is partly Trions fault as there's no Options screen before you actually login so you can't fix an invalid mode without logging in, which might not work because of the invalid mode!

When I run under Bootcamp, I can run at the full 2550x1440, fullscreen/windowed. (So I can use my 2nd monitor for web browser etc).

Under Crossover, the max resolution appears to be 1900x1200 for some reason otherwise I only see the top-left part of the 2550x1440 screen... which means the settings buttons are off the bottom and can't be reached!

So, running at 1900x1200. If I choose Fullscreen/windowed, it crashes on startup.
If I choose Fullscreen, I can't see the 2nd monitor.

So I chose Windowed which impacts framerates considerably. if I resize the screen by dragging the corner, it crashes with a windows error (Which I duly send off to Trion).

So, not perfect yet and I'm tending to just bootcamp it at the moment.

Of course, this would all be unnecesary if Trion actually made a Mac client instead of effectively ignoring 10% of the PC market.

Hell, even City of Heroes has a Mac client! And thats a pretty awful game to start with.

Cheers,
Bazz

Hey everyone, I just bought Rift and also bought Crossover Games and it keeps crashing for me only when I hit Play. I installed the game and created a character successfully, but it won't let me past that point.

Running on a brand new MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.6, i7 quad-core, 4GB RAM

Looking forward to a fix soon. I can see where Trion posted in their forum that this 1.2 patch included fixing this issue for Wine users, but obviously its still not. That was back on the 13th of this month too! Frustrating to spend $80 for the game and this software to play it, only to find out it won't even load.

Thanks for any help.

Steve

Rift 1.2 seems to be running ok, as long as I use the Low Quality renderer.

It acually runs ok with the High quality renderer unless I invoke any of the things like the Character screen, Achievements etc. Then the game crashes.

I'm on a Core 2 Duo 27" iMac (late 2009) model.

Are we likely to see similar problems with the upcoming 1.3 patch next week ?
